Graham - as a school governer you are not a professional. You are a volunteer.
And frankly having seen the petulance displayed in this thread one who is of overweening arrogance allied to crass stupidity and a very short fuse and I wouldn't allow near a school. to help govern it.

Because as a governor that's what you are. It's a barmy way to run an education system but that's what we have:
• School governors are people who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. No special qualifications are required, but enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education are important qualities to bring to a governor post. Governors must be aged 18 or over at the date of their election or appointment
• Governors are the largest volunteer force in the country; there are approximately 350,000 school governor posts in England
Sadly, many are dabbling amateurs, well meaning but without the in depth knowledge to really do the tasks the government expects of them, and heads have to carefully manage them in order that they actually do what the head wants them to do without allowing them to realise that, but this is really getting totally out of hand.
'School governors have a legal responsibility to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. Governing bodies have three key roles: setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and monitoring and evaluation.'

What a lot of bloody nonsense. For goodness' sake, I thought this forum wa about period property, not willy waving and "my dog's bigger than your dog" playground taunting.
Anyone coming here for advice on dealing with an old building is going to think "What a bunch of petty-minded, self-obsessed prats - I don't want any part of that. My builder was right, these purists really are stuck up their own fundaments..."

But I've just been called by the press to give my views on a conservation matter so I'm feeling very important indeed.
However, I declined to go and have my picture taken outside the building in question, as I'm not at all sure that the readership could detect which was the Building at Risk and which the old wreck.
I look forward to being totally misquoted and misrepresented as usual.

I've just had the building in question added to the national Buildings at Risk Register, so that should cause some astonishment with the Town Council! They think national planning policies are there to be ignored, unless it suits them.
No, I hate being asked to give press quotes as then I have to spend weeks threatening the editor and seeking corrections and demanding retractions etc etc.
So as I am trying to halt progress and therefore a baddy I try at least not to allow my face to be seen. The last time I did have my pic in the regional press and was on telly it was a Very Bad Hair Day indeed and Marianne Suhr need not fear I will usurp her place in the hearts of the nation. Or indeed the heart of the other half.
