Money is much more efficiently utilised in the private sector, and taking money off us without good reason when it can be done in far better ways is not something I wish to support.
Indeed, and when spending my money I can decide what those priorities are, who the service provider will be and so on. Have it taken off me without choice and spent through the public system and the result is dubious choices, inefficiency and a good deal less accountability.
I'm not against government spending of course, but I do object to some of the things its spent on, the way its spent at times, and the failure of government at all levels to be properly accountable.
Maybe not the best example as the army is a basic necessaity like it or not. But if you'd rather spend your allotted money on implementing a solution to the CFL non-adoption problem, or even SPAB, instead of funding another art gallery somewhre where they have more than enough already, I'd like you to be able to do so.

More case workers, cash simply to pay the rent, launch legal challenges, fight at public inquiries, publish hard hitting reports...

But that cash wouldn't have gone to voluntary sector heritage organisations. Especially those which are thorns in the side of the establishment.

Would you care to expand on how? It's a total mystery to me how cash from the House of Lords which was there to refurbish the House of Lords could suddenly be donated to a registered charity.

Divvied out by whom to whom? It doesn't work like that. 'Official' cash doesn't suddenly become surplus to be dished out to charities.
And I still can't actually see what's wrong with spending cash to appropriately replace a hand printed Pugin wallpaper, specifically designed by Pugin for the rooms in question, with a hand printed replacement from the original blocks. This is one of our finest and most important of buildings and if this country can't get it right there, then where can it get it right?

How can it be done? Well it just needs someone to say, why not put that money to there... and just because it hasn't been done before or is not normally done like that doesn't mean it can't be done.
Olympics? Someone said we need to fund this, so let's take money from heritage to fund sport etc....... It only needs the right person to say it!!
I met this all the time as chair of finance at my son's primary school. We had money given to us for training, repairs, etc etc, and we had to show it went for these items.
It didn't matter that it was government policy to put a pc in each classroom, so we get enough money to buy the pc's..... where was the money for all the cabling, fitting and insurance, extra electricity, consumables, printers??? We had to find that from somewhere else, plus if we didn't have our pc's in use we'd be fined.
Creative accounting.... Funnily enough all our governers did lots of update training etc.

But some organisations wouldn't want government money - and believe me I have far more idea of school funding than you have. And its difficulties. The two things aren't remotely comparable.
As for wallpaper - the difference between near enough and the right thing in the long term is insignificant really. I like the fact that the right thing was done.

If not, what makes you think you can speak for them with such authority?
If The Government went to Save and said here's £30m, you honestly think they'd turn it down and not save several important buildings?
If they do then they want kicking into touch and being replaced with something that wants to look after the buildings.
