I do agree with FF, though. "Quality" wood is a highly subjective term unless you are able to specify a particular grade. In pine, for example, the best grade is called (curiously) "unsorted", so if you specified that for a window frame, the joiner would know exactly what to use.

No - I know it's somewhere on the middle shelf on the far wall of the workshop. I just run my eye along the shelf till I spot it (or a large pile where it could be hiding).

So, you start to exit a filling station and just as you pass a stationary car on your passenger side the 10 year-old in the back seat of the parked car decides to open her door . . .



An unfortunate minor incident, no big deal, no one was hurt, other driver profusely apologetic, etc etc. In fact, hardly worthy of a grump at all . . . . .




. . . . until the repair estimate arrives :shock:

£500? You'll be lucky - on a Merc I reckon the mirror casing alone, by the time it's been sprayed to match the car, will be £500 !

I reckon £2k.

Serves you right for driving a big German car (Feltwell ducks and runs for cover to his glass house with an Audi parked outside!) :wink:

I presume you'll get it back on the other side's insurance though? Your insurer may well still load your next premium however, even for non-fault accidents, now THAT is worthy of a grump.....

The body shop assessor looked at the damage for about 1 minute, took a photo and the 'repair' estimate seems to be pretty much a new door and new wing mirror.

The claim itself is quite straightforward; the other driver admitted liability, his insurance company have agreed everything and I'm dealing directly with them, so no actual claim through my own insurance company, though they are aware of the 'no fault' incident. So no grumpiness as far as the overall process is concerned but I have to say I was surprised by the cost. It's now clearer to me how easy it is for a car to be written off after only a minor incident. In fact, if we hadn't finally consigned our previous rusty old Merc to the scrapheap earlier this year then it would definitely have been a write-off situation.

And yes, Feltwell, I've since been reading about how a no-fault incident can result in future premiums being increased. Apparently it's all to do with 'statistics' showing that I'm now more likely to make a claim in future. Hmm. You're right - THAT'S a definite justification for a grump. :evil:

Well, that and the accident lawyers now chasing me about injury compensation . . . :roll:

Repairing and painting our slightly rotten windows at the moment, I've just realised that every window pane has been scratched badly by someone previously, looks like they got a bit enthusiastic with coarse sandpaper, the deep scratches can be four inches away from the frames, and sometimes in the middle of the glass! bloody annoying how someone can be so careless or thick not to realise that sandpaper will scratch glass - pay peanuts get monkeys I suppose

Take heart, TheRoost. When I was in the wood furniture industry, I used to get forlorn phone calls from women, asking what they could do about the scratches in their kitchen tables, caused by the children. My response was always the same: "Madam, just wait a few years. One scratch is damage - hundreds of scratches is character."

To be fair, the door panel is creased so a dent puller would not be sufficient. Perhaps some filler might achieve a true Arthur Daley (RIP) job. :wink:

Yup - garages invariably refer to their "mechanics", or even more laughably their "engineers", when in fact they are nothing more than component replacers.

Agree it's commonly misused as a job title in this country, when you get a leaflet advertising broadband cable, they say 'it will be installed and set up by an engineer' recently I read one, Virgin I think, that said 'Professional Engineer' (!) I think they mean 'Technician' at the most.

The sad thing is that when you are actually a qualified engineer, the general population think that means mechanic/tyre fitter/washing machine repairer :shock:

I'm told that in Italy the profession of engineer is held in the same regard as a doctor or a professor, so they are often addressed as e.g. "Ingegnere Bianchi".
