Grump of the day

My grump is that I've found out where the Lexus is leaking power steering fluid from, but while giving it a quick top up managed to knock the reservoir cap (dunno where I'd go for a replacement given it's nearly 20 years old) down into the engine bay where it's now sitting on the engine splash shield I can just see with a torch but I'm not sure how to reach it.

Just need to get it to the garage without losing it somewhere on the road (wish me luck in the morning) hopefully we can reach it once it's on a ramp

Not sure it's a good idea to move it with no cap on the reservoir - if it's like my Audi it will leak fluid everywhere when you turn the wheel, and when there is not enough fluid the steering will become so stiff as to make the car undriveable. I know this because my reservoir cracked a little while ago, just underneath the cap.

You say it's sitting on the engine splash shield, do you mean the plastic undertray? If so they're usually fairly easily & obviously fixed from below, with a bit of grovelling underneath you can probably undo one side and maybe encourage the cap out with a garden cane or similar?

Either that or look on Ebay, there's likely to be plenty of used power steering reservoirs on there, complete with caps.

No good in this instance, but one of these is one of the best tools I have ever bought, invaluable in those "oh sh.." moments!

My guess is that the reservoir cap will be plastic, thus the idea of a magnetic widget may not be entirely suitable.

Feltwell's telescopic magnet is a great tool, though, and I have one myself. I also have something that might be more useful for this problem - usually known in this house as a "grabby thing":-

I'd be leery of driving it with the lid off. That stuff is very effective paint stripper

The telescopic aerial with a magnet on the end is a wonderful device, as is the grabber claw. Every home should have at least two of each: one for losing and one for finding.

Maybe and there's plenty of them over here most of them at the music festival in Mitchelstown...but that's no help to me especially as I had to travel ten miles the other way to get my chicken Alfredo from the Italian last night as I didn't want to run over any of them.

Grump grump, grumble grumble..Windoze 8 was designed for things with touch screens and didn't work properly on PCs with mice so microsoft-in-the-head replaces it with Windoze 10 which works fine with mice - AND DOESN'T WORK WITH TOUCH PADS ON LATOPS! Doh - so now I am back to balancing the laptop on my lap while I play shove-ha'penny with a mouse on the arm of the chair :roll:
