Hi twig, We just had a new downstairs cloakroom fitted with a Burlington high level system. The chrome downpipes seem to have a bend that is more than 250mm. I believe the fittings can be bought separately.

I sometimes feel that much of this whole 'period' thing is more to do with modern lifestyle and decorative choices than anything to do with historical accuracy.

Historical accuracy is to be applauded when it comes to new structural work that needs to be structurally and aesthetically sympathetic to the original building. However, I have never understood the point of getting obsessed with "historical" fixtures and fittings in a pre-Victorian building which wouldn't have existed before the Victorian era.

Victorian light switches, toilet fixtures, etc. are just as anachronistic in a pre-Victorian building as 21st century items would be. If you like them, then of course go ahead and fit them. But don't do so out of some misplaced attitude of purism.

Gosh! That was quite a good grump, wasn't it?!

I designed an historically accurate looking wood store this afternoon. Oak looking frame, projecting rafters and a timber infill at the side that looks like it was not intended to be exposed. It wasn't expensive and could have been 25% cheaper but I like the quality of design in older stuff even if the stuff wasn't there originally.

To avoid deviating from the topic I would like to grump about spending a day and a half splitting around 8m3 of wood. I will now seize up.

As an engineer, albeit a lapsed one, I should like to point out that in my experience that it's usually accountants - Finance Directors in particular - who decree that the glass is twice as large as it needs to be, often as a pre-cursor to a glass-size reduction program :evil:

Point of order m'lud: Finance Directors are not necessarily accountants. As a former one of the former and never one of the latter, I would say it could be a positive disadvantage.

If the glass is half full, it may need topping up or emptying, or both, possibly repeatedly.

The only valid FD question is "Is it in the budget?"

In my experience the only question an FD needs is "Why is this down as Op Ex and not Cap Ex?"

a twig - plenty of chrome parts start life as brass. Can you find a local chrome plater to convert your brass pipe into a chrome one? It shouldn't cost much as they do plating in a series of big baths; you should be able to get your pipe added onto a rack and put through the process quite cheaply.

Bad start to the day. I've been making some things to exhibit in the local flower show on Sunday and came back from my 'man shed' to have a cuppa (no KitKats here ) took off my boots (well trained of course!) leaving them in a slightly different place than usual and came out to find the cat must have had a bad bird last night and he'd been sick in them!!! :twisted:

I had to use the hose (not on the cat I might add ) to clean them filling them full of water so on with the old boots, which are old because they let in water, and after heavy rain I've got wet feet.... :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

For your peace of mind Penners the cat has recovered and is asleep in my chair...

Grump...my entries in the handicraft section of the local flower show failed to impress the judges... 8) and this picture of our cat when he was a kitten didn't move the judge either but a close up of a dog did... :shock:

Thanks. He ended up being called that because when my wife chose him from the group of kittens she touched his ear with a Tippex brush to identify him when he and his sister, Topsy ( ) were collected and brought home later that day.

In a bowl on one landing window cill and his sister in the bowl in the other window...





Penners is going to love this...he has a fondness for cats... :lol:

I wonder if cats were invented in anticipation of photography and the computer?
Our cat of 19 years died. Is that a grump?

Meanwhile, back in the land of the living, a cat - there are surprisingly few around here - has left its paddypawprints over the back of the Rolls. Which means I shall have to wash it, and I hate cleaning cars.

And yesterday for the first time I finished roughing and set up the oak door frame of our garage, and not believing the weather forecast which locally is often wrong, I left it up and this morning it's pouring. And I need to glue some of the splits in the old timbers, so that's that scuppered for a week or more while it dries.

Sorry Matthew. Just one last set of pussy pictures taken today shortly after I tripped over the trailing lead of the angle grinder and fell down on the side I've got the new hip so this does qualify as a Grump. I've nearly, well almost, finished laying the new patio for herself but the specifications keep changing... :roll:
