A little computer espionage reveals that you are hosting your pictures on the PPUK website. The links to yours look like this:

There's no reason not to do it that way, except that the php on the site then has to make decisions "on the fly" about what to do with the picture and how many to allow.

My 800 x 600 is hosted on my own site, and the link looks like this:

http://jillings.org/images/lighthouseorwhat800x600.jpg

- which means the php processes it differently. It should (if it's working right) size it to fit to whatever screen it is being viewed on. Hence, on my widescreen desktop my pic is a lot wider than yours, whereas on my iPad yours and mine are near enough the same size.

Not something to worry about. Just go with the flow.

That's a favourite grump of mine - the mis-use of commas and apostrophes (or "comma's and apostrophe's" as some would say). There's a huge difference in meaning between "That's odd Penners" and "That's odd, Penners". Precisely which one did you mean?

Another grump. We have now got eircodes (post codes) over here. I've got two...one for the old dairy building and another for the old milking parlour in my neighbours field which was demolished 15 or more years ago.

The best bit is that we're told we don't have to use them. :roll: There's also been a big mess up with postal addresses...mine in particular has me down as living in another village. We're told that that doesn't matter and to carry on using the address we have always used. :?:

You must have guessed by now that I have very little to do here but post on the Forum...

Well, my "grump de jour" is that since I sold the family trailer tent, I have a lot more space in my garage, so I decided to have a proper re-arrange. Everything that was in there had more or less stayed where it was first put when I built the garage, so it was time to have a good sort out, find some things that I'd forgotten about, and re-arrange with some semblance of logic and create more room to have more benches with more tools on. All good man-cave enhancing stuff.

Now, of course, I can't find a blo@dy thing. Even though it's only been a few weeks since the re-arrange. Prior to that I could find pretty much anything. Who says that it's the short term memory that goes first, eh? :roll: :lol:

My own experience exactly, Feltwell. Mrs P periodically mentions that my garage is in a hell of a mess, and I can't deny that she's absolutely right - it's the black hole of Calcutta! I would love to set aside several days (that's how long it would take!) to have a really good clear out and tidy up. However, I know damn well that if I did so the exercise would cost me a fortune, buying replacements for all the tools that I couldn't find*!

Well... it's as good an excuse as any! :wink:

* The lost tools would, of course, turn up as soon as I'd bought their replacements.

Following our downsize , the garage has proved most useful--except that OH has packed everything in so tight so that it is 'safe for sea' (as is his wont after years in the RN) as a consequence I cannot get at anything --not tall enough to reach the top boxes which are light, can't be bothered to move them all off one by one to get at the box I need. To add insult to injury he has not packed them in numerical order but in sizes---------

If you look more closely, Joss, I think you'll find that they are also cross-referenced by colour-code, weight and purchase date of contents. A tidy mind* and all that.....

*Not that I know diddley-squat about tidiness.

I've been project managing for nearly a whole week. Thinking things out, doing drawings, ordering things. It is frustrating how long it takes to find people or products that meet my loose specs like 'quality wood' and 'breathable finishes'. Advice offered on here in the past has been very helpful but I would like still to have a very good grump about it.

Why on earth is the stuff I want not mainstream? Has nobody painted their windows with modern gloss and found that it cracks a few years later, and don't they realise linseed oil paint is about the same price as modern gloss paint? Is a veneered MDF window sill really worth 80% of the price of a solid oak window sill? It is not 80% as nice.

If I can double grump there is an EU law I can no longer break - the one that requires an annoying pop up on websites about cookies. Another week lost (four days moaning and pointless letter writing to Euro MPs, and one day implementation of annoying stuff). I didn't mind when the laws were aimed at people producing poorly shaped cucumbers, but in the last year about four of the more badly thought out ones have been aimed squarely at me.

I feel your grumpiness but can only suggest you take a deep breath and relax because those grumps are not going to change anytime soon.

I'd say it's pretty easy to understand why the things you mention (and others) are not mainstream. For example, linseed paint is fine stuff indeed if you have a few days of warm weather with no rain and can leave your doors and windows wide open while you leave the house empty and go to work. Price is not really a consideration in such circumstances and it probably wouldn't make much difference if linseed paint was half-price.

Also, to be fair, 'quality wood' is a pretty meaningless term really and can be interpreted in many ways. For example, modern carcassing softwood is unlikely to be at the top of PPUKer's list of 'quality wood' but we can buy it almost anywhere certified to 'C16' (and other) quality grades as defined by European standard BS EN 14081, so it is very clearly 'a' quality wood . . . . even if you happen to require 'another' quality of wood for your particular pet project. Vagueness about such things invites disappointment and frustration.

Fact is, PPUKers are a self-selected tiny minority of the general population that, for many odd reasons, like to eschew the mainstream and nod towards more traditional methods and materials. This is the affliction we bear and I can't see our self-imposed eccentricity becoming mainstream anytime soon.

I'm fairly relaxed on the whole (apart from about the EU but venting helps with that and I am hoping a referendum will help even more). I ended up ordering American oak for the window sill as that is all the local joiner had in stock, and I need it quickly as I thought the old sill could be re-used until we broke it fitting the window. Should that be cill Penners?

Prices for aiming for 200 year (or more) lifetime don't seem much more than prices for doing things with a 20 year lifetime. Seems totally nuts. The other 180 years is almost free.
