I know I'm a rambling old duffer, but I must tell you a story about mail order.

When the kids were younger, we were on holiday in south-west Scotland. We came across a dairy farm that had just started its own independent ice-cream business. They were offering samples and we tried some.

"Ooh - that's really excellent ice cream,"said Mrs P. "What a shame they're so far away. I wonder whether they do mail order."

The kids still bring that one up at regular intervals, when they want to embarrass mum.

Hi

I've just returned tho the forum after a long time away. My house is in Lincolnshire, close to Newark, so I can't be far from you. I've done just about everything with ours that you might be looking at doing with yours ie removing cement floors and render, taking walls down, opening up fireplaces, taking up floors, laying limecrete floors with underfloor heating, stone work, brick work, plumbing, electrics, oak floors, oak doors etc etc. Just wondered if you might fancy popping in on one of your visits to Newark just to have a nosey...if you think it might help you at all. You'd be more than welcome, as would anyone really. I don't mind being a show-off for a while!! I could throw in a cuppa, too

For my two pence worth, I wholeheartedly agree with both FF's and PFord's posts.

So Evelyn's parting comment was correct, namely that this forum would degenerate into a mixture of squabbles and general chit-chat.

Well, it's been rather a long time since her departure that we've had a decent squabble so I don't think we can draw such a firm conclusion just yet. Indeed, the lack of such squabbles since her enforced banishment would seem to suggest it was the right decision.

I thought about replying to that but didn't do it. I do miss the undoubted knowledge, dedication to the preservation of and enthusiasm in general for old buildings. I don't miss the constant needless squabbles, treatment of newcomers and refusal to accept that there could be other valid viewpoints.

As for general chit-chat - what's wrong with that? Most of it occasionally touches on old buildings! There's room on here for that, just as there is plenty of room for other topics, which not all of us will be enthusiastic about.

For example - talk about period interiors, furnishings and decoration doesn't do much for me. However that doesn't mean that I can't see why it appeals to others, and it definitely belongs on the forum as there plenty of others who are enthusiastic about it.

It also won't stop me asking for ideas and opinions when I do finally get around to decorating something!

I cannot find words to express sufficiently my outrage and disgust .
Before little fingers start tapping furiously to criticise my need to protect Jacqy , FORGET it, she neither needs nor requests my assistance.
I am here to , like so many of you, say what I think.
I think the initial comments made by Mr Hughes were unprofessional and unfortunate to say the least, I also believe the "discussion" degenerated into a choice exercise in bullying (YES!)
We are ALL entitled, I believe, to have a choice in where we shop or what we buy, we are also entitled, ( as long as we harm no one ) to have beliefs which may not agree with yours, ( didnt we fight a war or two to defend these rights ?)
As for "ruining " the house,( which, had Jacqy not come along was ripe for demolition) I suggest you DO go and see it ,it is a tribute to the 14 years spent in a caravan ,their hard work ,and expense ,to bring back to life a medieval gem that had been lost over the centuries beneath layers of " modernisation" , if it isnt as " purist" as some may like TOUGH !
At the very least its still HERE!

And you’ve ‘really gone off me’ have you? You don’t know me. We’ve never met or spoken. Did you base the fact that you must have liked me in the first place on the fact that I own a period property? How pretentious!

As for the value of my house, I’m not so far up my own backside that I don’t realise that there is a ceiling price for it, no matter what I do to it. I could line the walls with gold and it wouldn’t make a bean of difference.

I find your comments against me, personally, unfounded since you know nothing about me, in the great scheme of things. Your comments against my house, too, are rash, unjust and ill-informed. If I were a weaker person, I could take what you said as hurtful, demoralising and intimidating. If you had made these sorts of accusations and threats in the workplace you may well have found yourself at a disciplinary hearing for bullying! However, I have broad shoulders, I’m proud of who and what I am and I won’t be left feeling threatened by anyone.

Indeed. But think of it this way...

Beer is, for all intents, water + vegetable oil + alcohol.

Petrol, on the other hand, starts life as a thick gloop beneath Saudi Arabia (or somewhere else politically unstable), is brought to the surface, shipped halfway across the world, refined, taken to a filling station and dispensed through pumps more complex than the average one at a pub bar. But it still costs less per pint than 4% abv schlack at my local.

Work that one out.
