Yes, Asda started in Leeds in 1949 as Associated Dairies & Farm Stores Limited in 1949 but was bought by Wal-Mart in 1999. Walmart in now the world's largest corporation in revenue terms.
You can watch the film from here. It's a 98 minute film, takes longer to watch than shopping in Asda, but you'll only need to watch it the once and you won't need to ever shop at Asda again.
Actually, Jackie, it makes sense to have your wellies made in China rather than Dumfries as it takes less transport cost. Only the finished product is carried half way round the world. The raw materials are produced in Indonesia. Manufacturing in the far east makes sense.

Sorry, but I've really, really gone off you today. Spoilt and selfish. You won't mind if I, or my friends, "choose" to come round and nick all your stuff too?. You've also ruined a potentially nice house, but as you don't care, that's your financial loss when you come to sell it, and find that nobody wants to buy it at the price it might have been worth otherwise.

It's the arrogant "I don't care" attitude that annoys to a pitch of Kenneth Williams outrage. What she is saying is, essentially, "I know it's wrong, because I'm well aware of the evidence that suggests it is, and I have said as much here, but I don't care what's wrong, because I like it" - which isn't the same as "I don't know any better".
We all do things (drive when we could walk, shop at Tesco when we could patronise a local independent in the same town, with better quality goods struggling to keep to similar prices) which we probably wouldn't be comfortable with if we bothered to think about it. The degree of ignorance required to feel not merely comfortable, but even proud, of doing so is a disgrace to standards of education and humanity in what is supposed to be a civilised country.

Alienated previous supporters and doubtful if it converted anyone (and lost 000s in donations).
On so many things, people are just sick of being told what to think and do by others....it's no wonder that there is a backlash.
Now...can we return to discussing gravel? Any thoughts on the best sub-base for when I re-gravel my driveway?

Ah - very hard balance to strike.
We shop online and Tesco deliver - which might I suppose make a marginal difference to the travel-related impact.
Shopping locally for a family of four for all our needs (we do some local shopping - meat etc) would take a significant period of time on multiple trips a week. This is time we wouldn't have together as a family or to spend on the house, or whatever. We think of that as quality time too.
Without bringing a feminist angle to this, I think there is a link between the widespread introduction of domestic appliances and supermarket shopping in the last century, and the incrfeased choicve for women in terms of work/careers. After all, these were predominantly "female" chores previously. (Oh God, what have I potentially started there!
Then when I think outside of my own little sphere and consider how the supermarket jeans probably require Vietnamese children in sweat shops to make them, it all gets worrying again. I sued to buy all (and I do mean all!) my clothes from Marks, but even they manufacture abroad now.
Given our population size, I wonder if supermarkets are an inevitable development - local shops couldn't supply everyone's food needs if we all used them. The scale and buying power wouldn't exist and would have to be created - probably by one of the locals... oh heck - that sounds familiar!

As someone who's spent time dealing with a wide variety of retailers, Asda/Wal-Mart are by far and away my least favourite to deal with, from a suppliers point of view. Quality is not an issue, it's just price price price - and I think that is reflected when you walk round their stores and look at what is on offer. I personally hate shopping at Asda.
Tesco you can criticise for many things and they are of course tough on suppliers, but they do at least, from what I've seen, assess the quality properly of what they are purchasing. Their QC standards are quite tough. I'm sure they don't always get it right, as Biff's example shows, but they are much better than Asda Wal-Mart.
What does never cease to amaze me is how disorganised the grocers are - honestly, Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys couldn't organise the proverbial booze up in a brewery. How they all got so far with how they operate.....
And please do not let the forum descend into personal sniping. Yes, people wander off topic, for me that is part of the charm. Harking back to past contributors isn't going to help either, especially when opinion is very divided on if their exit was a good or bad thing. There is room enough for a variety of views on here, no one has a monopoly on being "right".

lets face it guys , supermarkets are crap , each and every one of them. their food is crap , the way they buy stuff is crap , their 'environmentally friendliness' is crap , the way they treat local traders and farmers is crap , their pizza'a have no real toppings and the way they price their food in order to push certain products of poor quality is just really crap , but they are cheap , and thats what we all want. if everyone were concerned otherwise supermarkets wouldn't be any of the above. you cannot blame supermarkets for giving us what we want, you can however blame Kerry katona.
