Well, it's been rather a long time since her departure that we've had a decent squabble so I don't think we can draw such a firm conclusion just yet. Indeed, the lack of such squabbles since her enforced banishment would seem to suggest it was the right decision.Lime said:So Evelyn's parting comment was correct, namely that this forum would degenerate into a mixture of squabbles and general chit-chat.

I have to agree.
Applause, applause! Long live the thoughtful, balanced, mature point-of-view.Flyfisher said:Well, it's been rather a long time since her departure that we've had a decent squabble so I don't think we can draw such a firm conclusion just yet. Specialise forums such as PPUK attract people for quite narrow reasons of interest, so there should be little surprise that digressions risk straying into areas where members have widely differing opinions. We've seen that with 'green' issues, we saw it, unsurprisingly, during the general election and I'm sure we'd see it with any discussion about religion (no, please, let's not!). Such differences are what life's all about and I'd say we've been pretty good at agreeing to disagree. Long may it continue.
But I do think Pford75 raises a good point. People generally don't react well to being told what to do and how to live their lives. Those in the business of trying to influence how people live their lives would, I think, be rather more successful if they first tried to understand why people behave in the way they do. So, why is 'big-bad' Tesco the most popular retailer in the country? Why do most people not seem to give a hoot about 'civilisation-destroying' climate change or, if they do, only pay lip-service to doing anything about it? If such things can be understood then I reckon there would be more chance of changing things. It would certainly help to reduce 'issue fatigue' whereby people just turn off and ignore the issue completely.
I also agree with Joce's point that it's far more constructive for opinions to be backed up with reasons. I suspect we're all here to learn about old properties and if I've made, or am about to make, some horrendous mistake, I'd much rather know the reasons why.

You just can't compromise on the care of our historic buildings and chocolate

I would guess there are millions of people in a similar position and are therefore not in a position to afford the highest quality luxury end of the chocolate market. Nothing really wrong with that, finding market niches it's what business is all about, but those in such positions are surely likely to be the ones who appreciate the lower prices of supermarkets for their daily sustenance.biffvernon said:but work stupidly long hours and pay themselves approximately the minimum wage.

Thats a statement I can agree wholeheartedly with...and I'd like to add coffee to the list of things I just cannot compromise on.
