I can't speak for the one I linked to above, but mine works passably well. As you say, they tend to be better at metal than wood, but mine will still give a fair indication of where a stud/joist starts and finishes. I find that it's worth taking a bit of time to "fine tune" its sensitivity.

When 'im indoors' was still being military we had a security system thoroughout the house,it was linked to the cop shop with a promise of a 3 minute response. First time the Police turned up was as a result of the Security Installer testing, and forgetting to tell the Police, 3 min response with 3 range rovers screaming up the road! . Second time it was seriously required as I had an intruder into the conservatory. I slammed the connecting door to the house, shut and locked it whilst presssing the panic button.------- long wait no Police---- longer wait-- still no police, so I phoned, they told me that they could not recognise where the alarm was coming from, and somebody would be out ASAP. After 30 minutes a motor bike pulled up,Plod in leathers jumped off and banged on my door he turned out to be a dog handler, :shock: nearest of all. In the meantime the intruder had scarpered. If there had been a 3 min response they would have got him in the neighbour's garden where he was stupid enough to try again.

THE MORAL OF THE STORY is that the Installer had not given the Police my correct URN number---- so do make sure that your URN number is correct and up to date at all times!

Going to bed the other night, I noticed people in my shed stealing things.
I phoned the police but was told no one was in the area to help. They said they would send someone over as soon as possible.

Ha! I bet the caller would be charged with some sort of perjury/wasting police time offence.

Alternatively, a report of an armed burglar could easily be defended as an innocent mistake. After all, even the police have been known to make the same sort of mistake.

Joce, I've been thinking about your ceiling...

It's a great idea to use the Onefill - which I've used before, and like a lot. But the section I've revealed today
, near the window, is very bad. The way it's looking as the job's progressing is that I'll be amazed if we can keep this ceiling. I'm expecting to hear a huge crash at any minute - especially if that cat gets in the loft space above.

If it's repairable, it will be more washers and filler than anything else.

It's wonderful having them but it does mean one is unable to live like a pig. The house must be tidied, which takes a full morning every week, and maids must be supplied and catered for as they spend the whole day here and get hungry. Then, I must turn a sympathetic ear to their love lives, which are hugely complex.

However I'm very glad I met them. One, particularly, has said she'll do any job I give her. Next week we will set about the field side of the hedgerow to create drifts of daffodils. If I ask her nicely, she might even do a couple of hours on the woodchip!

But I think it's fair enough to tidy up for them. A house needs those two very different areas of care - tidying ( which is The dishwasher, laundry and putting away clothes, taking things to the recycling centre and to charity - how could a maid do that?) - and cleaning. I have noticed with them that if, for example, a pair of boots remains in a corner they won't lift the boots to vaccuum that corner. If the boots are put away the corner is cleaned. From this I deduce that when people say "my cleaner cuts corners" what they mean is "I am too messy to tidy sufficiently to make the cleaner effective." They advertise themselves as cleaners, not tidiers.

As well as doing all the normal housework, I am expected to limeplaster, dig french drains, carry wood and coal, plaster ceilings and walls, drill concrete off the outside of the house and then repoint and today I have been limewashing.

I'm not one to moan but .................

You are probably thinking to yourselves "I bet she gets gorgeous girly Christmas and Birthday presents in appreciation of all her hard work". Well you would be wrong, over the last few years I have had a hammer drill ( but didn't get the drill bits until a year later) a cement mixer, a chainsaw, a scaffolding tower and last year I was lucky enough to get a diskcutter.

Oh for a bottle of nice perfume and some chocolates.

Them wot said use water and steam was right. It's the only way. I am a little burnt, a little scalded, from the wallpaper steamer, and my eyes and hair are full of lead paint, and I think I'm allergic to the horses in the plaster, but apart from that it's going well! In places I've got back to the plaster, which was painted, so I'm looking at brush strokes which must be 200 years old, and very neat they are too.
