Professor Hughes, as ever, is spot on. Barchester Towers is the novel from which it comes and which I am currently reading. Very entertaining it is too.

Alas, I never seem to have the opportunity to sink my teeth into any Trollope. I bet Mr P has though. :wink:
As for the round/rectangular dining room debate, the only solution is to have several dining rooms. We have plans for a decent pedestal end Regency style table in the formal dining room, a large round dining table in the gun room and an informal rectangular dining table in the kitchen ( as well as various, round, dining tables in the garden).

Moo's kitchen is very welcoming and lovely, and there's no doubt it's a bit of a pain to cart dinner up and down stairs to the formal dining room. But the dining room here was built for the sunset view, and even though they've ruined the town view, the sunsets are as glorious as ever, meaning eating dinner in the underground kitchen would feel like missing out on the point of living here.
It's particularly nice what the sunset does with the chandelier, sending rainbows all over the room - so well worth the effort.
Of course the nights are drawing in a bit now
so we will have to make do with roaring fires.
