I think that you can see them in earlier photos so I guess that Jackpoint is not to blame. It looks as though it's been done a while ago and the holes opened when the render was removed.Schoolmarm said:

Fantastic goings on today
Over the past week or two we have gone from this.....
To this :shock:
The two holes in the wall are from the rayburn backboiler pipes.
Built up the different levels with whatever was kicking about like paving slabs and a mate put the latexing down.
Templates being cut prior to a visit to Stonecircle
A week later and we have a bit of a hurry on to get these lovely bits of slate fitted, but it all went swimmingly thanks to the above mate - Top Man!!
It was a bit of a surprise to my lass who thought we were getting riven slate, could have been nasty but she took it well :lol: Apparently she is currently adjusting her grand scheme to incorporate the smooth finish....UhOh
And early this morning some great lads came along and less than two hours later we have a beautiful
STOVE
Give us a twirl:
Spoilt for doors! Now when we fall out we can have a fire side each :lol:
No central heating but we are now (fairly) confident the house will be warm enough this winter. The downside, if there is one, is that it took a fair chunk of the budget to buy the hearth, stove and get the new flue fitted. I'm sure it will be worth it though.
We are still grinning like Cheshire cats!
First fire (and that lovely new stove stink) tomorrow. All very exciting.

I think we have had the open fire in the lounge going almost every evening since we moved in, in an effort to help dry the old place out - flipping marvelous things!
Actually the open fire in the lounge (an old Baxi) is great, there is a metal hatch in the outside wall which you open to take the ash pan out of - I am reliably informed that this little feature sold the house to the wife

Well so far we haven't let the stove go out It's been ticking along and kept the house around 18ish with the help of a 'leccy rad at the other end....now waiting for the cold snap....
Went around at the weekend with a lit incense stick tracking the draughts :lol:
Hasten to add that I'm not expecting to eradicate the breezes, after all there are a few open fires that aren't lit, but we did a little bit of door stop moving, a little draught excluder around some of the windows, some duck tape on a couple of door lock holes and put a some stuffed sausage dogs at the bottom of the doors which all helped some.
However the majority of the airflow (and it is a good flow) is caused by the warm air wafting out the door and up the stairs, cooling and coming back down - not that that surprised us, but what was eye opening is the demarcation line between flows is very definite at about four feet. All good fun!

So I figured it's time for another hobby :lol:
Now barring the log chopping and sawing up a bit of 4x2 I haven't done any woodwork since school (too many moons ago to count), so spent a few days reading and watching terribly helpful youtube videos. This was followed by some bidding on flea bay and many cockups All good fun though!
Talk about a steep learning curve , but so far we have gone from something like this with particularly dodgy joints
To putting the version umpteen prototype shutter up in a window that won't be staying
and shut.
Was chatting with my Uncle today about it and he suggested that piano (or continuous) hinges may work well so I will give that a bash on the other side. The good news, for me at least, is that I've got frame construction down to about half an hour now. Lots still to learn but I'm feeling more confident about it all
By the way, the startup costs for tools was about still less than the cost of a single window shutter supplied by a company, so hopefully IF I can get the hang of it, it will work out well.

They look very nice. Just in case you feel like getting a period view on construction I can heartily recommend modern practical joinery by Ellis, or carpentry and joinery by Hasluck. Are the panels within a groove in the frame??

Yes, there's a groove in the frame that holds the panels. I only had a bit of old wonky ply kicking about to try to use for the panel, hence the gaps are a little uneven. The next attempt will probably use some 6mm ply which should be right for the groove without thinning it down. I would try for a profiled panel, but depending on the window, we are going to try to make some of the shutters so they fold back into the rebate(?) of the window and this will make the actual panel pretty small - hope that makes some sense.

I think flat panels look good anyway. I think the next ones you do with the panels not extending proud of the groove will look better still. Look forward to the next installment!
