I think shutters could be made without the fancy cutters (ie more cheaply still) by routing or planing a groove for the panel in the frame, and making up the frame with wedged mortice and tenon joints. Bought moulding could then be nailed to the frame just like it is on most Victorian doors!

Lime, thanks for your kind and helpful comments. I agree. We couldn't find a way to get cheap column rads so have left it for now, but the plan is upgrade eventually.

On a "pink" note I agree Jose, curtains work really well with shutters (yours look wonderful by the way). I have a curtain problem with one particular window though as it's a seat and partially obscured by a neighbouring property, so I thought curtains may block out even more light. If you had any ideas that'd be great, it's the window with the blue plastic and duct tape curtains :roll: on "scaffolding woes" I think. We can always butch it up by talking about drills and rawl plugs needed to put up poles/ tie back hooks etc. :lol:

A few bit's n pieces to report.....
For those interested in secondary glazing. We've put the clingfilmy stuff up at the windows, and for interest put a thermometer on the sill between the film and the window with another thermometer on the sill roomside. Yesterday night it was -2 outside, 6'C in the 'cavity' and 18'C on the sill, so I would say that it's very very handy stuff indeed

We've also been fortifying the shed a bit. We've had to remove pretty much all the panelling as the elements/damp/rot or insecties have had their wicked way with it so it's gone from

But it's not all pulling down. We've repaired/replaced some of the wall plates where needed and started tying the rafters together with new joists using big bolts and spikey washers (my technical terms are impeccable!)

to this (again, different POV but gone from a joist every other rafter if we are lucky to a joist that is much longer on each rafter)

(By the way, those aren't stains on the end panel, it's dust caught by the flash)
Also been spraying just about everything with wet rot/dry rot/bug killer as we move along, with a bit of glypho for any intrusive ivy :twisted: So with any luck the old place will be a little sturdier now
Half down, half to go.....and the only cock up so far was a loft hatch in the wrong place (according to wife's plans for the place :roll: )

Very interesting about the temperature gradients with the insulation, and looks like great progress with the building. Don't worry about the loft hatch being in the wrong place,I'm sure there will be scope for making amends at a later date.

No amends to be made, I have just been told to move it :lol:

It was gutting to remove the panelling I can tell you - like you say it must have looked really lovely in it's day. I believe it was a carriage shed for a local 'well to do' house and think that part of our house was built for or used by their gardener.

Had a quick bedroom move today - the theory is that the 'middle' bedroom will be warmer than the end one we are currently in as it has the stove chimney going up through it. We shall see. Anyhow, the plaster is in need of doing but it's not going to happen for a while so it's magnolia time.

Talking of curtains, I should give a very honourable mention to my fantastic father in law who has repaired this window.
Not a great before picture but here we go....and no, the window wasn't done today :lol:

It was in bad bad bad condition and the angles are more squew-wiff than the photo shows!

Me too I've had a bedroom change. I made a mess upstairs and couldn't be bothered to clean it up so I dragged the mattresses downstairs - how cosy is this?!

Only problem is, it's so nice living all on one level I'm starting to wonder if I want to move back upstairs at all!!

Hasn't everyone been busy - probably busier than me anyway
Well after recovering from a nasty bought of man flu I thought it was time to drop an update in, so since the beginning of december we have...

Reduced a large pile of logs into a little bit of ash. My word that stove can eat the wood!
Had a couple of electric radiators ticking over - and just received the electricity bill :shock: Blimey!!!!! (And the wife is still in shock )
Put a little rug down and tarted up the 'dining room' - Wifey was getting a little down about the state of that room and it only took a morning to give it a lick of paint and whatnot :lol: This is one of the rare moments when the fire wasn't lit at the crack of dawn.
We also ended up putting a curtain at the top of the stairs which cut down the heat exchange draft no end. I know it's nice to warm the whole house, but the draft was getting wearing

And lastly, most of the panelling is out/off the walls, and have finished tying the shed roof together...

Talking of stairs, I rebuilt the bottom two of my stairs at the weekend, having taken them out due to rot over a year ago. So what did I do first thing Monday morning? Fell down them.
Who put those there?!
