Sorry folks; this is not only pedantic, but also off-topic, but I will go ahead anyway!
All educated Romans spoke Greek, which was very much seen as the language of culture, since most of Roman literature, art, architecture (brief nod to the nominal subject of this forum here) etc. was ultimately imitated and developed from Greek. In Roman schools they spent a lot of time learning huge chunks of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey by heart, in the original Greek, before moving on at advanced level to the study of Rhetoric which was also heavily based on Greek examples. However, the Romans considered themselves to be much more down to earth and practical than those artistic, unreliable Greeks, (let alone the over-emotional Celts in Britain) and MUCH better at building solid useful things like walls, aqueducts, roads and military defences, fighting wars, running an empire etc. etc. They were also very good at designing baths with underfloor heating systems, even though the efficient use of these relied on having plenty of slave labour to stoke them and a lot of woodland still around.
When they had to invent a word for something, just like us, they frequently drew on Greek words, like "hypo" for under and "hyper" for over (instead of Latin sub and super) not to mention "kauston" - meaning burnt, or red-hot in Greek. In fact, I'm not sure whether hypocausts were first invented in Greece or Rome. My Latin dictionary gives Hypocaustum as "a bathing room heated from below, a sweating-chamber", used by Vitruvius in his architecture textbooks. It also gives the pure Latin word (presumably used by Roman nationalists who didn't like all that namby-pamby Greek stuff) as "Vaporarium".
Right. Now we can get back to Lime mortar etc. By the way, long ago I used to teach Latin & Greek, before switching to music - and I'm now also a musical instrument maker, when not doing house renovation or work-avoiding by reading this forum.

And until not so very long ago no English gentleman could consider himself educated without knowing Latin and Greek of course (and a smattering of other things, but only the classics really counted).

You see - you should have had a private tutor instead, who would have taken you on the Grand Tour and you could have raided forin parts for antiquities with which to furnish the new wing (Greek Revival of course...) at Penrose Towers.

Ah well - yes. I can't say that Latin lessons were my favourite either. The fact that the Latin master was a weed with Brylcreemed short back and sides, a tweed jacket with elbow patches and hand knitted cardie and matching socks didn't help, and he seemed not to have heard of the Beatles. Which was odd.
