Thanks Jon - red and gold with no tinsel is our rule of thumb (which means finding somewhere else to hang all the monstrosities the kids bring home proudly from school!). The white lights are smaller in real life than they appear here, but I think there is a bit of camera shake making them "stretch" in the pic.

Like you, my job is to get the tree, erect it and light it. The dwarves and SWMBO then undertake the magic bit whilst I observe the yuletide tradition of taking a well earned festive break with a glass of cold cider and admire the work.

I have not had an erection yet.

I was told that it is best to let it acclimatise outside so I have been keeping mine out in the cold. Apprently when you then bring it in to the warm it blossoms into a beautiful thing.

I see problems afoot for Stephen. Poor chap has to listen to others' tales about their proud erections whilst his is languishing out in the cold. Then he'll bring the poor thing indoors at the last minute, it'll start to droop and the whole thing'll be over in a flash :shock: Poor chap, I think he's on the rocky road to erection envy!! :roll:

If you are exceptionally lazy you can hire people to help you with your erections I'm told. Some of the companies that usually set up new ranges in retailers offer this service in December, as the retailers don't like doing range reviews in peak selling season.

Contrary to the myth this is not the oldest profession by any means, helping people with their erections is a relatively new thing.

Yes I do eny those who already have theirs, but at least mine is well rooted and I can therefore keep it going year after year, enjoying it every Christmas (even if it doesn't last long - my wife likes to keep to the 12 days of Christmas only).

My tree was bought last year in a pot, still growing. It was only tiny. We laughed at how tiny it was and how expensive it was.

I kept saying, how good it was that it would grow over the year then we could bring it in again each year until it was too big. We would then plant it...................hmmmm



I can't bear to bring it into the house in case it has any slugs or caterpillars :roll: .

My tree is a bemused comment on some of the animals who have caused me so much grief and joy this year. Even Mr Fox, so unkind to my feathery babies, has been a magnificent sight with his sharp shape cutting through the grey dawns on the brow of the hill.

These lovelies have kept me awake at night: they live in the spinney and hunt outside my bedroom window:

There are, of course, mice, robins and squirrels (haven't found any Christmas rats yet), and who's at the top? I don't believe in God either, but I do believe in Cat!

I've struggled with lighting/exposure - this is the best I an manage of the whole thing- a tree that's been living here happily for years and gets pulled out and replanted each year.

Well, I can assure you they give out bugg3er all heat! And the rope seal has fallen off the log burner, so I'm burning logs at twice the normal rate

Thanks Joce - I takethat as high praise indeed; I'm loving your woodland themed Christmas. Is there a turkey on the tree somehwere? One of the most stunning trees we ever did was a 13 foot (we had 14'6" ceilings at the time) monster tree with just white lights and hundreds of small purple bows. I love Christmas and the chance it presents to decorate the house. This house is made for Christmas - as indeed seem to be most period properties.

We have the whole family here next year, so I'm thinking of a Victorian theme - goose (probably inside a goat inside a hippo or something), proper pudding, parlour games, candles on the tree (indeed candles everywhere), etc. Wil try and grow everything, including birds, ourselves. Can't wait.

What a superb plan. If you get your own pigs going then you'll be able to serve the traditional baked gammon on Christmas Eve (traditional in some parts of the country anyway!) from your own husbandry too.

Christmas is great- I'm hosting two this year, one for my parents, my brother and his family this weekend and one for Chris's parents (and possibly brother, depending on if anyone needs bowel surgery) on the real Christmas weekend.
