From what I can see in the picture, the upright post (stained a dark colour) looks to have been produced by traditional hand sawing methods, as the marks are so irregular.
Don't know what others think, but it looks to be quite an old piece of timber, which should be retained. Indeed, so do those rather characterful studs, but yes, agreed, they were never intended to be on show, but covered with lath and plaster (as above the door).
