Back on the subject of tiles. Does anyone have any experience with tiling over concrete floors. My floor is not in the best of condition but not broken or cracked, mainly just dusty and a little brittle on the top layer in places. What do they do before laying the tiles, do they seal the floor with something? Also do I want to use a dpm which is something you read a lot about on tiling guides. Also does anyone know, if I am not having skirting boards, but lime down to the floor does the tiling come before the walls are plastered or after?

we are halfway through tiling our dining room floor with porcelain tiles on concrete floor (we didn't lay concrete BTW).

If builders are doing it it needs a really good sweep to get rid of as much dust as possible
then a good brushing over with a wet PVA solution to seal in any remaining dust.

Hope your floor is fairly level - they should go around with spirit level to check - any areas of concrete that are lumpy could then be broken out and a little mix put in to level BEFORE they start laying the tiles. Any slight dips can be raised by using a levelling compound - keep an eye on folk doing this work for you - don't allow them to try to build up depth with tile adhesive - which is very expensive

any DPM should already be there as part of the whole concrete floor thing - (concrete would have been poured onto a membrane)

finally plaster walls first - then tile the floor second

Oh - any areas of stone wall that jut out at floor level - it's worth doing a bit of work with a chisel to knock off sharp bits before you plaster and start flooring - just a thought
