Indeed. A trend has been noticed in recent years for certain individuals to modify their knockers using modern materials so that they are a much larger version of their original form. This does not enhance their functionality and indeed can leave them at odds with the surrounding form, i.e. out of proportion - in extreme cases such that they take on an almost cartoon-like appearance and do not hang correctly. There is also concern over how these modifications will stand up to the test of time.

The mis-guided belief that this is an enhancement to knockers can be noted amongst certain "celebrity" types, using the loosest possible definition of celebrity.

However some excellent examples of non-modifed large knockers are in existence which are entirely complimentary to their surroundings and which may on occasion invite comments of appreciation, although these may sometimes be inappropriate and cause offence to the owner.

Hereditament - which might affect members of the forum - particularly the incorporeal kind (of hereditment, not member, that is).
A hereditament is a type of property that can be inherited and incorporeal hereditments include such things as "Rights of Way" and "Tithes" which may attach to a property but have no physical presence.

A Corporeal Hereditament would be land held in Freehold (so that the physical land is owned, rather than just a charge upon it.)

Enhancement of original features with modern materials is rarely aesthetically successful, in my humble opinion, although a fleeting glance along almost any newsagent bookshelves - and not even the top shelves - suggests there are many specialist magazines dedicated to the practice.

Indeed. The point of confusion I have is that I have only ever met 1 individual who considers the process to be an enhancement - everyone else I've met considers that the original form is much better left alone.

I'm afraid I simply feel that my knowledge of that topic is insufficient for me to venture a learned definition.

All I know about them is that they're normally at the front, and can be very useful. Oh - and some are unsuitably and un-necessarily large.

Anyway I can't believe I made such an erudite post about medieiaaaval ironwork and some of you just saw it as a salacious opportunity to discuss knockers. Shame on you! Here is some appropriate religion as your Sunday punishment.

JESSE: or Tree of Jesse, a representaton of the genealogy of Christ, in which the different persons forming the descent are placed on scrolls of foliage branching out of eachother, intented to represent a tree; it was by no means an uncommon subject for sculpture, painting and embroidery. At Dorchester Church, Oxfordshire, it is curiously formed in the stonework of the chancel windows; at Christ Church, Hampshire, and in the chapel of All Souls' College, Oxford, it is cut in stone on the reredos of the altar (or at least this was the case in 1913 which is the date of the publication of the fine work from whence I confess to have stolen this golden nugget) ; it is often made the subject of the stained glass in an eastern window. We seem to be around J or K - ermm........

Jedding axe - otherwise known as a cavil or, for a K word, kevel. A type of axe used for splitting stone, which sounds like hard work!

Jack rafter - a short rafter usually between a hip and eave

Knocking up - a phrase to invoke jokes worthy of Sid James & the Carry On cast, alternatively mixing and making workable a batch of plaster or mortar.

Knotting - shellac dissolved in meths (I think!) used as a sealer over knots in wood to stop sap exuding through the decorative finish.
