NEEDLE: a supporting member passed through a masonry wall and supported on legs (often Acrow props) on each side, to allow masonry below the needle to be removed without collapsing masonry above the needle. Needles are usually used in groups of two or more.

Francis Johnson of Bridlington 1911 to 1995
Architect in the Classical tradition but with Scandinavian influences. Trained in Leeds and influenced by Carr of York and Raymond Erith, his work ranged from churches and council houses to country houses. He was responsible for the conversion of Fairfax House in Castlegate, York, including re-instatement of walls lost when it was converted as part of a cinema, and the radical paring back and reshaping of Settrington House after the fire of 1963.

As well as sensitive conversions of existing country houses he was responsible for new ones such as Strathconan House, Sunderlandwick Hall and Hilborough House.

In an age of Modernists, Johnson provided a Classical alternative without pastiche. His meticulously-drawn designs encompassed even furniture. His fight to save the old buildings of Bridlington Old Town led him to stand as Independent Councillor and for election to the Lords Feoffees & Assistants to the Manor of Bridlington -who controlled much of the property. He was also a prominent light in the Georgian Society of East Yorkshire - all of which would be nothing unusual in the 1980's but this was before the Second World War.
