Dad came round today and insisted the bedroom floor is a DIY job, sshhhhh, hope Chris doesn't read this, he'll go mad. The last DIY floor was bad. I didn't seal it, and, according to Toby Newell's wonderful article, floors must be sealed. Toby also says wax must be put on very sparingly, and buffed off immediately, which is opposite to what I did- so I'm hoping for better results this time.
We've scrubbed and scrubbed (Ecover soap with linseed) and wire wooled and sanded (no machines) and picked off paint all day, and now it looks completely different - honey - not grey - and paint free! We've left all the 19th c splices, nails, worm holes and damage in place to keep as much character as possible. The floor is structurally sound, it must be, I've been round and round the edges perched on a ladder about 10 times and not fallen through.
I need to order the stuff, which stuff? I'm thinking no stain, so just a shellac seal followed by wax. (Johnson's Traffic Wax) Anyone used shellac and can tell me what to buy? I see there are these amazing flake things you dissolve in a carrier and also various different tints of liquid shellac. I hoping the shellac will darken and enrich the colour and provide a shiny first layer.
Any help much appreciated.
