Yes, peat cutting, cheese cutting or 'whale processing' have been suggested locally... having googled 'peat cutting tools' it's not a design that seems to come up though. Seems a likely use though.

It's a hay or silage knife from the days when either were made in stacks (hay) or clamps (silage) from loose grass. I've used one in earnest in my youth. They need to be sharp - you drive them vertically downwards to cut out the hay/silage in blocks. But I think you missed a 0 off the blade length - 60cm not 6!

Excellent Keith - that must be it. Defintely more hay and silage in northumberland than whales.

Yep, I agree...it's a hay knife. They sometimes had the handle the other way and others had a double handle. We used to use them for silage but they were hard work. The later silage knives were mostly a triangular pointed shape with a piece fitted on it so you could use your foot to help push it into the silage.

Could be something to do with squirrels though... 8)
