Digging in the garden on the weekend, found this in a flowerbed in the back-garden. I've dug down about 30cm before getting bored. It's absolutely rock solid with no movement at all. Looks like something might have broken off from the top? Looks like the "T" piece is wobbly and may pull out from the inside given enough force. Any idea what this is?!

As far as I can tell, the whole thing seems to be some form of galvanised metal. As far as I've dug down, it looks exactly the same - although there are some tinges of green here and there which makes me wonder if there's copper in it.

I would say that it's a wrankled slump valve. Unfortunately the nobbling handle is broken off, so it's impossible to tell whether it was left-handed or right-handed.
