Ilona73 - you are a very useful presence- please will you now choose a giant rug for me that's either plain chalk pink or duck egg with an interesting, deep texture? 2.5 by about 3m would do it. Thanks. xx

If you are hanging an expensive paper the last thing you need is a paste that is not just right.

Having tried most types of paste my preference is for the ready made stuff that comes in big tubs. It is gloopier than solvite so you run less risk of getting it on the face of the paper. Flour & water takes time and patience to get to the right consistency. I believe you can add Borax to flour and water paste to give it some resistance to infestation.

I'm not risking me Farrow and Ball to mites or mould! Thanks all, for the thoughts on wallpaper paste.

Have you been to a B & Q warehouse lately?
Sounds ridiculous but they do have some really large rugs no more than £300 and superb quality.

I like Frankie in Eau de Nil In L Ashley; the colour's perfect, and the texture is interesting. But I think I'd need 2 for each side of the bed as how could you arrange the big one to extend either side of the bed?- it's just not big enough.

You could always buy however many you need and turn them over and join them together with carpet tape.. it would give the illusion of one large rug

That GH Frith is brilliant! Loads of choice in plain rugs, and a good spectrum of prices.

As soon as I've passed driving test I'll go to Cannock to visit. The screen plays havoc with the true colours.

I like your idea of taping together as well, that hadn't occured to me. As the join would be under the bed it wouldn't even be obvious, especially as I want to put some kind of bench thing at the bottom of the bed so we can sit in front of the fire and watch stuff on i -player - no TV- in winter sometimes it makes sense just to live entirely in the bedroom and breakfast room, and shut the others off- so thank you for your help towards cosiness!

I'm sure that you know, but if you don't have a TV and just watch the recorded stuff on iPlayer and don't watch anything live then you don't (currently *) need a TV license. If you do do watch live streams, then you should have a TV license and it is possible for the BBC to track you down via IP address though I haven't heard of this occurring.

(*) this loophole may be closed soon.

I take pride in the somewhat petty fact I've never needed a license in my life. If any TV inspector comes here I shall offer them a large glass of wine, with a clear conscience, and a tour of the 18th century.

You could always contact them.. very often they will send out swatches and samples so you can ahve a look before you buy to check colour etc... you know the saying if you don't ask you don't get!

As for joining rugs together... if you use professional carpet tape... nine times out of ten you wont even see any type of join especially with the type of rug you are thinking of buying..

Back to wallpaper - if you ever decide you don't like it, here's a top tip from a previous owner of my house.

Today, after stripping off some of the MDF fake tongue & groove (looks as good as it sounds!) that lines my downstairs loo, which had been carefully applied with about a hundred tubes of no more nails, I found white tiles underneath - quite a poor quality job had been done of putting them up, and large patches were loose but somehow still attached to the wall.

On stripping some of the tiles off, I found that someone had stuck the tiles directly onto some "lovely" 1970's floral vinyl wallpaper!

So there you go - don't like your wallpaper, just tile over it, don't bother stripping it off first :roll:

We have the same thing in out en suite.. except the tiles applied under the fake marble panelling are actually plastic tiles in massive sheets with fake grout and glued onto the wall so we have ... lime plaster,,,, paint, wallpaper,,, then the plastic tiles and finally the fake marble panelling, now its all removed we have gained an extra 4 inches on the room!
