I am trying to find some wallpaper that I spotted in a glossy house magazine sometime last year--- deep red with gold chinoiserie pattern. I have searched all the usual hand blocked companies and the designer sites -- Watts of Westminster, Cole and Son, Colefax and Fowler etc, without success-- does anybody have any ideas? Just looking for about half a roll.

Have you looked through ALL the papers on the Sanderon Interiors website? I love this website. The Little Greene Company do one in their London wallpapers which is called "Cranford, cherry gold", that you might like. And I think Farrow and Ball's Brockhampton Star is very jolly, BP 532. (But they're evil making you buy three rolls) I will keep my eyes peeled for your specific wallpaper as I obsessively pore through catalogues.

I have been having a similar problem recently. I saw a fabric in a glossy mag last year which looked like just the thing for my drawing room curtains - a rusty/brown/orange silk velvet cut with a bold Louis IV ish pattern in a golden yellow colour. It sounds wierd, but I can assure you it was even more gorgeous than the beautiful young model posing alongside it.

But can I find a sample? It turns out it is made in Spain and although a UK distributor was mentioned (an interior designer's in a posh row of shops in South Kensington) they they do not even hold samples, yet alone any stock, and have had to send a request off to the manufacturer.

My old Dad's name, too. Except he spells it with an 's' - Joscelyn. In that form it is, believe it or not, a corruption of 'Justin', meaning 'just'.

Interesting, Gareth - I got exactly the same report, this afternoon. I've PM'd Simon for more information.

You guys are trying to use the "upload attachment" option which uploads the image onto the ppuk server. There is a limit to the size / number of files that can uploaded (so as to stop people overloading the server) and that limit has been reached. It is also a pointless complicated process when the image is already available on the internet.

For pictures on other sites, there is no need to do this. Simply put the URL of the image (must end in .jpg or .gif) and then enclose it in img tags. Takes two seconds to do.

The above picture was produced by just typing the following:

Complete process:
1) Find your image
2) Right click on image and select "Copy Image Location"
3) Write your post
4) Press the "Img" button at the top of the edit box.
5) Hit Paste (Ctrl v)

Could I ask what might be a stupid question? Have you got lime plastered walls and if so how dose wallpaper behave on lime? My miniscule knowledge of lime tells me that it breaths i.e. it allows moisture in the wall to escape. Dose the wallpaper not absorb this moisture and perhaps go brown over time? Sorry I’m probably being a complete ignoramus but if you don’t ask you don’t learn.

Well, there will be others who will give a more expert opinion on this but all I can say is that here the wallpaper has lasted well considering the cement render on the exterior and lime plaster on the interior. In places it has peeled a bit, but the wallpaper is 18 years old and in most of those exterior walls it's fine.

So my plan is to re-wallpaper. (and take off the cement render on the outside)

Correct, MdB. I certainly use your technique when cross-posting photos from other sites (despite the fact that it's not really good netiquette!), but I was trying to upload a photo of my own.

Maybe I should upload it to flickr or picasa first.

Very true and can get you into trouble on occasions as the owner of the image can change it to whatever they like.

Chuck them on Flickr (or photo sharing site of your choice). Depending on how many images have been uploaded here, Simon might not want to increase the limit as server space can get expensive.

On the question of wallpaper on lime plaster...

Lime plaster has been used for a long time and so has wallpaper. In fact pretty much any wallpapered plaster wall dating from before the mid 20th C will be paper on lime, and the combination has clearly stood the test of time.

Almost all machine made paper from Victorian times on, including that used for wallpaper, has a high acid content. The acid is used in the papermaking process to help break down the wood pulp. It is this acid content which makes paper go brown and brittle over the years, especially if exposed to air and light (think old newspaper and cheap paperbacks). Books and wallpaper from the early 19thC and before by contrast were made from handmade paper with a high rag content and neutral pH. As a result these can look much fresher today than much more recent productions.

Lime, being alkali, should help to neutralise the acid somewhat which I imagine would prolong the life of an otherwise acid paper.
