Well I survived the night. -5 deg C outside, +7 inside with a layer of snow having turned up in the last hour (our first proper one). The heated blanket did make the bed nice to get into and we have enough covers on to make it cosy on the inside so it wasn't too bad.

Ice on the inside of the windows here. I've had enough. There's only one solution - find the nearest John Lewis, get cosy in there and refuse to leave. They've got everthing I need there, nice bedding, new ovens etc.

Ooer - this thread's bringing back some uncomfortable childhood memories.
The technique was to get into bed fully clothed (apart from shoes, of course) and cuddle one's pyjamas until everything had warmed up. Then, very slowly so as not to lift the bedclothes and let in cold draughts, undress and put on warmed nightclothes.
In the morning the process was reversed, which is why I usually looked rather crumpled when I went to school.

Memories indeed, but we lived in luxury by comparison because I remember having a hot water bottle with which to fend off the cold sheets. However, after desperately clasping said hot water bottle and shivering oneself to a reasonable temperature, any movement would bring one immediately into contact with icy sheets and the shivering would start all over again.
Electric blankets are pure rocket science by comparison. One can bask in the warmth and then, when acclimatised, move to another area of the bed for a boost of fresh heat. It really is pure bliss to undress in a cold room (no jim-jams in the FF household - apologies if that's too much information :shock: ) and jump into a hot, toasty bed and revel in the warmth.
What is truly horrible, though, is working all evening in an unheated part of the house and getting pretty cold right through in the process, then stripping off in a cold bedroom in blissful anticipation of luxurious warmth . . . . . . . only to discover - too late - that the electric blanket has not been on at all because some useless offspring unplugged it to charge their mobile phone. Little darling. :x

Identical memories here. Back in the days when he had eiderdowns instead of duvets, the sheer weight of bedclothes was huge - thus the shirt that was dragged into bed to warm up always got creased to hell - much to the annoyance of my mum, who had ironed it.Moo said:

Harrumph! Frost still is on the inside of a proper period property - mine! And there's no way I could get dressed in the mornings. I sleep in many layers, hat, and gloves, and have Chris' big fur-lined coat on the floor beside the bed just to pop over in the morning to take him to the station. I might contemplate changing my clothes at about midday when things are slightly warmer, but only after heating them on the Rayburn for a good while. As for stripping off to wash, no way.

There is a good old fashioned way of keeping warm in bed. Presumably undressing and dressing could be done inside.

It's in a house at the Museum of Wales site at St Fagans restored to c1800 condition. There was a painting hanging on the wall at my parents home showing a completely built-in bed in a cottage. My brothers have it now, and I haven't seen it for some time.JoceAndChris said:
