Interesting that it's in the care of English Heritage- Thomas Telford seems a little out of their usual run of things.

Far too quick!!
Yes, Thomas Telford. Born in Scotland, known for such engineering marvels as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the Menai Suspension Bridge, and the Holyhead Road (which runs 100 yards from my house). In the earlier stages of his career he was surveyor of public works for Shropshire, hence this rather lovely little cast iron bridge near Shrewsbury is one of his.
As you say, not normal EH fodder at all!

My guess is that it's the remains of a ventilator fixing for a gasolier, in the ceiling of a former chapel or public hall, in Cornwall.

I think you would be wrong on all counts there. (To be honest, I'm not quite sure what the bit in the middle is. Anyway, it isn't important for finding out what what and where this is)Gareth Hughes said:
edit - Having checked up on this, it looks like the bit in the middle ventilates the roof space above. It doesn't ventilate the area below. I guess it would also be unlikely, though not impossible, that any gas lighting was used in this building. I'll give a hint tomorrow morning if nobody gets it.

Well it certainly looks like the roof vents you see in countless village halls up and down the country, the unusual octagonal design is a bit different, though.
With regard to the Telford bridge above, I am beginning to suspect that if Telford was involved in half the structures that are attributed to him he would have been doing well!
With regard to the windows in the Ft George chapel, they do seem to lend themselves more to the military design of windows than the ecclesiastical, perhaps they built the chapel with the left-over peices from the rest of the fort!

Yes you do definitely get a prize. I've tipped the computer upside down and round and round and that still looks like a pipe to me. At least a load of cat hair has fallen out.
I'm not going to get this one. My head hurts so much from trying I'm going to have to give up and go shopping. Next time someone posts a mystery building, could they please choose from, say, Lincoln Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Selfridges in Oxford St to give me a chance?
