You picture wouldn't be Castle House in Elloughton would it? I have my doubts, because the house in your photo is rather grey in colour, but can't think where else it might be.

That's in Wales, although a quick Google of reveals that said castle looks very nice.

Correct on both counts! Tis a fabulous place. Its not every wedding where you can squeeze a game of snooker in before the ceremony.

Interesting. I've only previously heard of 'scutching' in the context of a scutching tool for breaking or trimming bricks. A scutching chisel is also handy for channeling walls. The 'scutch' is a steel comb-like bit that fits in the end of the chisel or hammer. Perhaps a similar shaped tool was used to beat flax?

Looked Swinton Park up in Pevnser. Sounds wonderfully interesting. A house built in several phases from the early 18th C, finally remodeled and wrapped in its Romantic Castle garb in the 1820s.

I had my reception at the Chartered Accountants' Hall in London. Not as dull a building as it sounds, or perhaps should be. Edwardian baroque (John Belcher) with interiors on a scale which perfectly marries grandeur and intimacy - verging on the pompous maybe, but never overblown or bombastic. My late father recounted in his speech how, in the very same room (the library, not the one below - that's where we had the drinks, but not laid out like this I hasten to add) he would come in during the blitz to warm up by the fire, under the disapproving gazes of the presiding grandees. He was then a young private soldier in uniform manning a searchlight battery, having volunteered against the wishes of his firm. Forty years later he became something of a Grand Old Man of the Institute himself.
