Rob, I would gladly have given someone the £76 to change the tank, it was a right pain in the ar@e to do! Those magnetic "scale preventer" thingies are highly questionable as to if they do anything at all.
A water softener definitely works - we bought one because my baby (at the time) daughter had really dry skin, my wife also noticed that that she had very dry hands compared to when we lived in a soft water area. I fitted the softener and it made an instant improvement to my daughter's skin and Mrs F's hands. The taps and toilets stopped getting limescale straight away, the shower became easier to clean etc.
Softener's aren't cheap and they are a pain to fit so in all honesty we wouldn't have bothered if it hadn't have been for our daugher's skin problem and that we lived in a very hard water area. You also have to retain "hard" water to the kitchen sink for drinking purposes, as softened water has a definite saline taste.
