If you use little magnetic fixings, the clips wouldn't need to be on the outside of the frame. That would buy you another centimetre.

We have quite a bubble wrap mountain (Christmas by Amazon & John Lewis online!). That would insulate the windows and let in a little light, although I think the idea of using the shutters for their intended purpose makes sense!

Mrs W has been putting up additional thick curtains over doors, windows, passageways, etc as fast as I can put up curtain poles. If only we dared switch on the boiler (low on oil, family arriving in a couple of days), we'd know if they made a difference!

I could buy a large roll - or rolls - of garden fleece and insulate between windows and shutters?

I don't think fleece would give you much insulation. I reckon Robin's bubblewrap suggestion is much better - with the added bonus that it wouldn't get soggy if you suffered condensation.

Robin - I Mrs FW buys you a lovely present for putting up all those curtain poles. Chris just won't do any DIY at all these days, though, to be fair, he's having to study hard for the new job. My top New Year resolution is to learn how to identify the correct drill parts, drill, and screws, and be able to put up my own poles.

Anyway, Mr P's idea of stuffing a duvet into the bars has made the most tremendous difference in the brek room, this morning I was able to eat my toast without wearing the sheepskin coat - amazing.

This has been an impossible window to hang curtains at as the bars lift up and clip onto the little hook you see ( meaning there's no space within the recess for curtains), but this is a good mid winter solution. The long term aim for this window is to remove the bars and to have a locking double glazed window made. It's the room with the Rayburn in so it's important to try and trap that heat.

Gosh, I'm so glad it helped! However, you do need to keep eye on it, in case it starts soaking up condensation.

If you want to do away with the bars at that window, I recommend that you just extend the length of that dangling hook, so that it's at groin height for anyone climbing through the window.

Joce - I had some magnificent presents yesterday - including......(dramatic pause to build the moment)..--. an automatic egg incubator!! I also got a candling lamp and the little place they go when they are hatched instead of your spare bedroom. I'm so excited.

I'm already looking at buying hatching eggs online, but I don't know what to try first - chickens, pheasants, snakes, velociraptors, or clones of myself!

I wish you many happy hatchings in your new incubator - which make and model? The potential is extraordinary.

Few things can equal the sight of them pecking out of the shells and then turning magically fluffy as they dry. But whatever you do, don't interfere with the hatch process until 48 hours have elapsed. And don't have it happen at a time when you can't give the new littles full attention!

And don't ever put littles in with bigs, and don't put in big bowls with them (drowning, etc) and dont let them get too hot or too cold and and and - hatching and rearing is as complicated as any degree!

I have had no success, as yet, at rearing for selling, but next year I'll have a growers' enclosure and will know what mistakes not to make again.
