Moo - could you measure the width of the clip frame thingy and the fixing, in the last pic? It looks like more than an inch to me.

Thank you so much for all your help with this. There are windows here - especially downstairs, that would really lend themselves to this type of treatment. I'm not sure I can make it fit on the shuttered windows though.

Hope this shows what I mean about lack of space for those fixings - ten of our windows are like this

It does look very tight down the side, Joce. Particularly where the hinges intrude. And remember that you'll need enough space to include several clips, so the width of those, as well as of the beading, will be relevant. Obviously you can avoid the hinges when you fit the clips, but even the areas between the hinges look pretty narrow.

You could make the job more practicable by pinning some narrow timber strips down the inside face of the existing beading, to give more fixing space, but I don't know whether you would want to do that.

We have secondary glazing in our house but it's still cold and in the attic bedroom we still get frozen condensation on the inside of the windows. Mind you, I suppose it would be even colder without it!

I've just done the measuring - very carefully - and can state with absolute confidence that the little clip needs 1cm outside the SDG sheet (the edging strip is also 1cm wide).

ps It really does seem to have made a difference - the temperature in the breakfast room this morning, before the central heating got going, was 15 degrees.

15 sounds toasty to me, well done Moo. The temperature here is between 0 and 5 in the unheated rooms. Even my efforts with paper, card and cloth seem to have made a difference though.

I could fit this in the music room, and the kichen, but having measured that beading - which is 1 cm- and seeing how the shutter fits tightly over the top of it I think its going to be impossible in the other main rooms. Thanks for the suggestion of pinning a new strip of wood onto the existing beading Penners, but I suspect that might impede the closing of the shutters.

Edit - The brek room's looking a bit impossible as well, with the bars - especially the middle one is leaving no clearance for secondary glazing.

But the ones where I cook could definitely be done.

Joce could do as you suggest with the barred window, and simply fix some over the sashes with lots of drawing pins. Problem solved.

Shutters are drawn up tight over all the ground floor windows - living in darkness preferable to freezing. I could buy a large roll - or rolls - of garden fleece and insulate between windows and shutters? That wouldn't require any drawing pins.
