When you sign up for PPUK's forum, you create a profile. One the items of information that this profile allows you to include is your location.

A lot of people don't include this detail, making it much more difficult for them to get region-specific advice. Knowing where you are located enables others to give much more appropriate answers on questions relating to structural, architectural and even geological or topographical matters.

For example, there is currently a question on the forum asking what type of windows would be appropriate for a barn conversion. This would be much easier to answer if people knew where the barn is located.

You don't have to be too specific - if you don't want to give the name of your town/village, then even the county will help.

OK - I admit it... except for the "western spiral arm" bit. I suspect Mr D Adams is responsible for that, and he came along well after my schooldays were but a dim, uncomfortable whisp of memory.

However, I've just caught a bit on the telly where a raid of the placcy rubbish bags behind a number of banks, building socs etc, gave names, addresses, account nos, financial details, statements, mother's maiden names - enough to nick a whole swathe of other people's identities. And dosh.

Worrying really.

We've got a foolproof way of disposing of our confidential waste - we shred it , then we turn it into logs for the stove.

Aha - I was going to post and ask if people ever used those log making thingys.

There seems to be two types - a 'dry' cylinder one and a one you make the paper into mush, which you then squeeze into a mould.

You reckon they work?

Much of our paper goes on the compost heap.

Yes, we use both of them although not as much as we expected to as they can be quite time consuming. My brother was very impressed with the dry log making one - 'what a spliff!' he said :wink:

We seem to have too much for the compost heap even though we only get a Sunday paper. The dry logs are not as substantial as the papier mache type bricks, but make good fire lighters. The bricks burn quite well, and as I said before we do use much of our shredded confidential waste in these. The papier mache ones are better made in the summer so they get the quickest drying time - its hard enough getting the laudry dry in the winter without large gobbets of soggy paper lying around the place! They don't look as character-ful as logs when stacked up in the fireplace though!

Inner city Newcastle - hence no log-making of any sort.

It's also why it's hard to get a workman sympathetic to historical wrecks like mine - too many landlords out to make money from letting to students means the building trades are geared to cheap and chatty jobs - so long as they look superficially OK .

Tell me more about these logs... I hate emptying my shredder as it always creates such a mess getting the stuff into a container to recycle it. Usually I compact the shreddings so hard in the shredder bucket to fit more in that it takes ages to empty it out. I have to poke it with something until it all falls out and that just makes the prospect of attending to a full shredder even worse... :wink:

My Grannie used to use old newspapers to make "logs" which were dead easy to do and was my saturday task when I went to her house.

Take a newspaper and start rolling VERY tightly from one corner - diagonally across the sheet.
Fold long thin sausage in half.
Tie a knot in the double sausage.
Use to light fire.

I'll have to have a go tonight to see if that's right - it's about 50 years since I did them!
