On the original topic of this... beware the neighbour who berates you for not being up with the times!

I have one who had a go at me when I bought the house because my predecessor apparently did not maintain his side of the wall properly, whereas the neighbour in question covered his side of the flint and chalk cob wall with sandtex. So it was perfect... until it fell down.

Back on topic, I've been out and about with a new camera to play with today...
I found another example of semi-detached mismatched modernisation, that really should not have been allowed.

Wonder if there is any way abominations like this can be submitted to the property police (COs?) to be corrected and returned to their
original state by careful restoration.....does anyone know if this could happen, say in a conservation area that was designated after the
horrors had been inflicted?

This pair are on a main street, I haven't checked whether they are within a CA yet...at least the front door surround is still there on the right hand side.
Begs the question ....Why do these people buy older property if they don't even like it?

If it's not listed, and not subject to an Article 4 direction, then that, and worse, is perfectly legal, without any permission.

I thought conservation areas put rules in place as to what can done to the outside appearance of the property such that changes to the windows, surface finish etc had to be approved. It sounds like, Gareth, that this is completely wrong. If so, what protection does a building get being inside a conservation area?

And as I understand it now, you can partially demolish something in a conservation area without permission too.

I know that taste is a highly subjective thing, but I find it utterly incredible that anyone could actually decide to put those horizontal "glazing bars" on the windows. Who on earth would step back from that and say, "Mmmm - nice."? :evil:

If it's a single dwelling, and not subject to an article 4 direction, it's protected only from a few alterations (such as stone cladding, dormer windows, and certain extensions), and total demolition. This wasn't the case until the Shimizu House of Lords case in 1997. The Heritage Protection Bill was supposed to have reversed that situation (a mere 12 years later) but it's been scrapped and the latest is that no-one in Govt is interested in reviving any part of it, even the stuff that EH hoped could be done without the need for new legislation.

Which also means that buildings being considered for listing still have no protection from pre-emptive demolition.

That's a bit of a shame. Stone cladding on the left-hand half of that building would have gone quite well with those PVC windows.

So partial demolition could be the porch off of the front of the house, Could it also be the house off of the back of the porch?
