on the really dark days i switch on the 3 20watt flourscent under pelmet lights for a boost.

Thats the sort of interesting new way of lighting that I think we may have to resort to. I'm experimenting with uplighter fluorescents over pelmets, and shifting the fabric up a couple of inches to hide the bulbs.

My impression so far is that it is useful for topping up lighting, but not friendly on its own.

Any other clever ways of using fluorescents in a traditional home gratefully received...

Trough fittings are 'it.' What you did is a trough fitting, but with the tube close against the wall. make one where the tube is a way out from the wall, and the result is good.

A common mistake with fl is to use too much power. troughs should give comfortable light, not unleasant.

troughs can be right out in view if suitably finished or disguised.
