I wonder if the meths cools the surface momentarily but enough to alter the cutting/breaking characteristics?

I doubt it. I think it's more likely to do with cleanliness.

So would a teeny grain of dust or sand stop the blade from perfect contact? Sorry, I am that original annoying child that wants to know "why?"

At the risk of being accused of trying to get this errant thread vaguely back on topic, I have an associated question: is it feasible to re-use old window glass? I have a couple of panes from a rotten sash which has been replaced completely, and both are big enough to cut down to replace broken panes in smaller sashes. (One was broken by something which fell from the scaffolding, and the other by yours truly whilst splitting a lath...)

Is this something which I should be able to do myself with the right tools (having never cut glass before), or am I better off taking the panes to a professional?

Not only can you reuse, but it can have a value. I have both bought and sold old glass (not the same glass!) to a local chap who mostly does stained glass, but also is often asked about "wobbly" glass.

I spend the school summer holidays cutting 3mm old glass whilst helping my father restore 12 glasshouses in the lea valley area. Let me tell you, unless that glass was dipped in an acidic solution bath for a while and then washed and wiped absolutely clean only one in ten panes would cut in a straight ( ish) line.

In hindsight I should have spend that time revising . ( instead I had to resort to cutting, hammering and sawing in one discipline or another to earn a living, no regrets just FURIOUS )
