I know how you feel Jose. I hate them too. I think they make the place look like a hotel. Well not any hotel you'd actually want to stay in because none of its finished but you know what I mean. But the guys are right you soon forget they are there. And being dead's no fun. if I have to have them so must you.

How many did you get? Are they installed yet?

I don't like the look of fire alarms either but I have at least a couple of dozen.
In most of the rooms none are fitted to a wall or ceiling.
Instead I place several (av 3 per room) on top of cupboards out of sight.
When first placed I tested out the positions by burning toast in the rooms.
Strangely enough the alarm in the cupboard under the stairs is especially sensitive and goes off at the slightest whiff of smoke from almost anywhere in the house.
Most are of the ionisation type.
A few optical alarms are placed low where cold smoke log is most likely to occur.

Oh Lime, I love it. I wish I'd done that. I'm not sure Building Control would have allowed it. When we had the extension built we had to have an alarm in the new bit but he also made us have inter-connected alarms in the hall and landing. I grizzled for ages but had to concede in the end.

Oh, Robin. I know you're really strong on these smoke alarm thingies, and we really will sort them out as a priority, but so much got in the way over the weekend. And my housekeeping money has all gone on paint this week and I'm living on soft boiled eggs and pickled plums.

Poor Chris spent literally days looking at filtration systems and has chosen and ordered one.

Incidentally, make sure you get interconnected smoke alarms that all sound when one sounds - because I was rewiring the house I was able to fit wired ones (they have back up batteries and are linked together by a 4 core wire and have a silencer switch in cupboard) but they also do battery only radio link versions if you are not rewiring. My wife's online friend is now currently living in a hotel due to the fact that the top half of her house was destroyed by fire the day before yesterday. She was lucky as though in bed she hadn't gone to sleep and heard a noise which she investigated. If she hadn't of heard the fire, she might not have been able to post about it... On the other hand, if she had a smoke alarm, she might have been able to deal with fire at an early enough stage to save not only herself but her house as well.

It is being investigated that last I heard. Very likely to be an electrical fault (washing machine I think).

Indeed - and a lovely cottage . These: http://www.wilkinsonplus.com/Security/Uni-Com-Smoke-Alarm/invt/0232731 are very compact, very cheap and very loud (and there's a branch in Grantham). If you don't like the idea of them on the ceilings, I find they're pretty unobtrusive sited high up above the door of each room (though best to follow siting advice in the instructions). The interlinked ones are a good idea though so if one goes off they all do.

(You can't apply lovely mustard paint/paper to a smouldering heap of rubble!)

You are all very kind. MdB, I'm so sorry to hear about what's happened to your wife's cyber friend, how awful for her.

If you must know I can't really do anything without Chris' co-operation, and he's not really co-operating- or he is, but in his own time. I waved the Screwfix catalogue under his nose a few days ago, he said he was far too tired to think about such things (it was late) and since when was I suddenly so interested in smoke alarms anyway? So I relayed some of what's been posted on here which started the whole argument about how I listen to PPUK but not him, and now the subject has become a sore point.

He says that when he has a moment he'll choose what he thinks necessary, and when he has a free weekend he'll fit them. So hopefully they'll be in place by the end of March.

If it makes you feel any better no-one is coming here at all because of the e coli in the water, so no-one else is endangered.

Ushy M - thanks for the link, I'll look at that, and the tip of siting them above the door - good idea. Much better than where I'd imagined them. Good idea about the interlinked system too; I don't hear anything at all when I'm in the kitchen - loud music, the doorbell upstairs, are completely muffled.
