A water filter was fitted today -just waved goodbye to the plumber, and to the old ways of the cottage.

Alas, farewell to icy gushes of unadulterated well water, the ancient taste of stone, the electric thrill of wondering if this sip would be your last! Hello to enervating water just like everyone else's, sanitised modernity, chrome levers, plastic fixings, enforced tubes.

If Chris can't fit smoke alarms until the end of March, then you - a very capable DIYer - should surely be able to do so yourself. At £3 each from Wilkinson (an admirable brand if ever there was one! :wink: ) you can surely pinch a few quid out of the housekeeping for two or three.

As for fitting them - two screws each. That's it! And if that's difficult for you, just pop them temporarily on a high shelf or on top of the wardrobe. It's not the ideal fitting, but it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

If Chris is concerned that you listen to PPUKers and not to him, then you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb! (Not that I'm trying to stir up marital disharmony).

Now if you lot had actually bought smoke alarms recently, and fitted them, instead of just nagging me to, you'd know the decision of which ones to buy is far from simple. I'd have just hit a pin randomly in the collection in the Screwfix pages, but Chris has said it's vitally important to ascertain which type is best suited to the room, taking into account where carbon monoxide detectors should be located as well. Futhermore, at 5 foot nothing, I can't reach the ceiling even on top of the ladder, so can't do it myself unless I erect the scaffolding, which I refuse to do. And I'm certainly not going into the attic, a place where it's imperative to instal one, and nor would you I'm sure if you could see the acrobatics required to get in there.

If it makes you feel any better we have one working smoke alarm in the drawing room perched on a light fitting. And the job will get done.

It's curious the things that frighten us. Right now I'm scared, a car's pulled up and that's completely unheard of. No one has come to the door. I've locked all the shutters, bolts and bars, and taken down down the gun. Chris will be home soon, I've called him and asked him to get a taxi, as I'm too scared to go outside. It's probably somebody lost, or looking for somewhere private, but I'm not taking any chances...

To me, that threat of rape 'n murder is so much more real, and terrifying, than the vague threat of fire. And yet probably more people are killed by fire in remote spots than attacked?

So many risks here - take your pick of what to worry about. Or worry about none.

I keep a baseball bat by the front door. The crime prevention officer was suitably impressed when he came round after we'd had our mower nicked. He said, "aren't you scared down here all alone?" and I waved the baseball bat at him.

My theory is that you are much less likely to be attacked out in the country and off the beaten track than in a city. But I know when things on bump in the night and I'm home alone... BOO!

It is great that whatever I pick to moan about receives a listening ear - thanks so much. The car pulling up so sneakily and disappearing related to a bunch of teenagers putting up a tent in the field along a bit. Chris saw them off, I hate spoiling their fun but that sort of thing can't be encouraged, before we know it there'll be orgiastic displays from the entire school.

I know attack is not very likely, crime is higher in cities etc, but what bothers me is that crime in remote spots can be particularly nasty. Being mugged in the street is less terrifying than being in a house where no-one could hear your screams, and where the murderer would have time to chop you into little pieces and feed you to your hens. Security lights, motion detectors and alarms are on the list of things to do, and I'm slowly chipping away at Chris' dog phobia.

Thanks 'Marm, it's a Doulton Rio 2000 ceramic filter, fitted under the kitchen sink. I still get poisonous teeth-cleaning water in the bathroom.

The filter has ceramic candles that need cleaning every so often, and cartridges that can be replaced.

The plumber would have preferred to fit it on a pipe in the attic going into the tank, but we were advised not to by the manufacturers as the water has no fluoride (?) in it so apparently bacteria can amass within the tank even after filtration. Also, like everything here, the well water tank in the attic is ancient (it's beautiful, I haven't been in but Chris took a photo for me) and absolutely filthy. I have no idea how they got it in unless a section was roof was removed.

Are you sure he didn't say 'chlorine', which is added to mains water for anti-bacterial purposes and would keep the bugs down in a cold water tank. I thought fluoride was only beneficial for teeth.

It'll be interesting to hear how your digestive system reacts to the lack of bugs over the coming weeks.

As for the 'poisonous teeth-cleaning water in the bathroom', just remember to spit and not swallow. :wink:

Yes, I'm sorry, chlorine. I'm dreadfully muddled between chlorine, fluorine, flouride, and chloride.

My digestive tract seems pretty unshakeable, thanks for asking.
