I'm not too convinced by the "marmite flavoured things" trend - with the exception of marmite flavoured cheddar, which is very nice.

I've never quite bought this whole "combine everything with chocolate" idea either. I don't mind chocolate, I can take it or leave it - let's face it, I'm the wrong gender! Mrs and Miss F adore milk chocolate, myself and the 2 Master F's aren't that bothered. I prefer plain chocolate.

The idea of mixing chocolate with things like marmite or chilli just doesn't sound right somehow.

Not right at all - and I'm a great fan of marmite toast.

Eeuugggh - dunking bread in soup! Things that are soggy, that were never designed to be so, are not nice. The one exception is very stale crispy baguette in an authentic French onion soup - if it starts out rock hard it doesn't disintegrate unpleasantly.

I don't even like putting milk on cereal, and would much rather have it without.

On the main topic, I think Crunch Creams are fantastic, but not sure if they are a match for gypsy creams (can't really remember them). My local "Costcutter" garage (petrol only £1.29 a litre when Tescopoly were selling it for £1.11) were doing two packs for a pound recently. This gave me ample opportunity to sample them extensively!

Edit: I'm a bit concerned Penners likes these biscuits so much, considering their appalling spelling!

I'm on a roll now! Found a recipe:

"This is from a book called Ladies, A Plate by Alexa Johnston
But it can originally be found in an old Scottish book by Margaret Bates

4 oz butter
4oz castor sugar
2tsp grated orange zest
1dsp golden syrup
1 egg yolk
6 oz flour
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp cream of tartar
½ tsp baking soda

Filling
3oz chocolate
Or
2oz butter
¾ cup icing sugar
Zest and juice of 1 orange

Pre heat oven to 375 f /190 c
Line 2 baking trays with baking paper

Soften the butter, sift together flour,salt,cream of tartar and baking soda and whisk to combine.

Cream the butter and sugar together, beat in orange zest and golden syrup.
Mix in the egg yolk and dry ingredients.

The dough will be crumbly so use your hands to nead it together into a ball.

Take teaspoonsful of the dough and roll them into balls, place them into rows on the baking sheet, DO NOT FLATTEN THEM.

Bake for about 20 minutes, they will spread and crack. Don’t let them brown too much.

Cool on a rack

Once cold prepare the fillings spread onto biscuit halves and sandwich together.

They will keep for a few days"

What is wrong with the spelling of "Gipsy Creams"?

Is this a test? If so, Miss....Miss.... I know, Miss.

I suspect that the "y" was replaced with an "i" in order to avoid any risk that people might think the product was made out of real gypsies.

Hmm. According to the New Shorter OED ( which takes up most of my boofshelf) "gipsy" is a perfectly acceptable variant. Certainly I have always spelled it with an I, perhaps because I am so familiar with the Anglo -Saxon, gipcyan.
