Well, worms, I'm afraid I don't have any good news for you.

A scrupulous search of the biscuit shelves at our local supermarket failed to reveal any Gipsy Creams. So I asked the Operative I/C Biscuits. She said, "I haven't seen those for a while. What you need is Fox's Crunch Creams."

I gave her an elderly look, which was intended to say, "If that was what I needed, that's what I would have asked for", and swept out imperiously*.





* Well, my sweeping would have been imperious if I hadn't collided with an enormous pallet of Roses Chocolates that I'd failed to spot.

Are you referring to the Travellers Biscuit, Graham? Unfortunately your recipe doesn't make clear whether this is an identical product to the old Gipsy Cream. Neither are you clear on whether it can be consumed while stationary.

Yes, that one had me, salted rat was my thinking - which might well be the secret ingredient in a Gipsy Cream, come to think of it!

I think it is actually a typo for sal aeratus - baking soda!

Thanks, but since these seem to be the Voortrekker equivalent, I think I'll give up for now and add them to the list if I am ever back in SA*. There are a few products that I am happy to pay others to import from SA, but they mainly come in 75cl bottles!

*I also need a new can of Sunbeam Rooi Polish!

Why? Is it because they are building their bland and boring sheds in every little market town up and down this fair land, destroying the traditional high street as they go?

They've stopped selling Marmite XO !!!

Marmite XO - Extra Old - it really is a thing of beauty, it's taste cannot be surpassed. Even "normal" Marmite, whom prior to the release of XO I would not hear a bad word said about, pales in comparison to the culinary delight that is Marmite XO (especially if spread on sourdough bread).

This revelation, this beautiful nectar, has only been in the shops for a few months. And now the tasteless, incomprehensibly stupid and cretinous Tesco buying team have withdrawn it from the range :evil:

I quite like Marmite XO, can you tell? :wink:

Never tried XO myself, although I am very partial to (OK I love) normal marmite. I will check out the local Sainsbury's...

I was browsing round BHS today and they have a selection of marmite goods, which includes of all things - Marmite Milk Chocolate.

I've just googled it and came up with this:

Marmite is to launch a Marmite-flavoured chocolate bar next month as part of its Christmas gifting range.

Under the brand Very Peculiar Milk Chocolate Bar By Marmite, the product will be stocked in retail chains such as BHS, Debenhams and Robert Dyas from 4 October.

The 100g bar blends creamy milk chocolate “with a hint of the yeasty spread”, says the company. It ha s suggested retail price of £3.

Other Marmite-themed gifts include A Marmite Cheese Board Dome complete with wooden handled cheese tools and a homemade brew from a Marmite teapot and mug.
