I have been trying to identify that gorgeous blue/green wallpaper sample with the red flower in your drawing room alcove. Could it be Colefax & Fowler, from their Summer Palace collection by any chance?

It's a Zoffany, Manchu from the Fleurs Roccoco range. It's not as expensive as you and I normally like, and I'm afraid that shows in the quality of the paper, but nevertheless the chinoiserie pattern is very pretty and the colours jewel-like in their brightness.

I've only got back to the computer after a very jolly weekend in Grantham, but I've been busting to join in the chorus of gratitude and praise. It was definitely the social event of the year, graced by the cream of (pp)UK society. Wit and wine flowed in abundance, and the game pie was a triumph (I'm so glad to learn that Chris will be able to have some when he eventually ventures back home).

And one of the delights is the fact that lovely Joce is no longer isolated. She now has a new Best Friend (my lovely sister-in-law) and the beginnings of a local Social Circle (all sorts of delights are being planned!). This morning we stood on said sister-in-law's terrace armed with binoculars and suspect that she and Joce face one another across the valley. This hypothesis will be tested by means of some sort of semaphore.

That's just marvellous and I'm so glad you came and brought the lovely Kathryn. She sent me a wonderful email, and I'm very excited by future plans, all of which must be arranged by hallooing across the valley.

Thanks Joce. Just looked at it in Liberty's and ordered a sample. There are some similar ones in another Zoffany range and by Colefax & Flower, but the background blues are less intense. Curtains in a matching plain turquoise silk with red trimmings (or vice versa, or red with sand?) and woodwork painted the sandy/beige colour of the stems perhaps?

When you get the sample of the paper, you'll see there's a slight shimmer to it. The birds, leaves and stems are more gilt than sand. Whilst I'm not sure if this is very authentic for 1830 ish, it does allow you to use gilt in your colour scheme.

I'd pick out the raspberry for the curtains and use a lightweight crushed velvet, like ioha crushed silk velvet by James Brindley, with he trimmings in that turquoise blue and gold.

Painted, or embroidered silk, chinoiserie panels, framed in decorative plaster mouldings, and symmetrically placed around the room, would also be lovely, teamed with matching fabric for the bed curtains. Oh, I've thought about this too much. I'll be so jealous if you do a Chinoiserie bedroom!

I think the lower picture you posted is gorgeous, and the blue green woodwork works because that colour is within the paper. But the Zoffany one has a dark green, so you'd need to use that to get them to match.

You'd then have yellow and dark green, the same as your lovely drawing room.

It is hard not to repeat colours though. I've used blue, green, yellow, and am planning on reds. Short of doing a pink room, which Chris wouldn't allow, or chocolate brown, colours will have to be repeated. Getting different shades within the colours is important I suppose.

I suppose the only explanation for that contradiction is that I dislike spending money on boring things like replastering, and would like to blow all spare money on exquisite furnishings and decorations- alas- impossible.

An understandable attitude, I'm sure. But I promise you'll enjoy your exquisite furnishings and decorations even more if they're applied to an intact and structurally sound building.

This is a terrible picture but the best I could find on the net. Much better one on p 150 of Regency Style by Stephen Parissien - a book I recommend by the way.

So the next question (and more urgent one) is what should the adjacent bathroom be decorated if the bedroom is based loosely on the Temple Newsam scheme? It is a Victorian bedroom with a large mantlepiece (probably originally from the drawing room) into which I will be plonking modern minimal fittings. Tiles (on the modern minimal bit) need to be chosen. Choice I guess is raspberry, turquoise or buff.

Joce & Chris and Nigel Watts keep putting the photo's of your beautiful wallpapers and fabrics on here please. That way I get to enjoy something that just doesn't look right here. The original residents of our little stone cottage, just had white limewash, applied straight onto the stone walls and it wasn't until later on in the cottages history that they had the walls limeplastered. If only I had known that before we started to plaster, we could have had the first room stripped of concrete, repointed and then limewashed in a month instead of the year that it took us :lol:

A belated photo from me - we were on hols following the party exploring Lincs and Notts and boosting the profits of the National Trust's tearooms. Mr Juju and I are keen to host a party perhaps in the Spring - it will provide an incentive to finish all the half-completed jobs! We are already planning our outfits - late 17th century style to match the age of our house. I think I can make a dress for me but Mr Juju's outfit may stretch the limits of my sewing expertise!
