By the way, having recovered from the ageist insult (a bit - not entirely), I must congratulate Gareth on his excellent pome. Unlike most amateur poets (and not a few professionals, come to that) he has skillfully constructed humour, rhyme and scansion.

But I still haven't forgiven him for the chocolate cheesecake incident.

Then you'll be disappointed to know that the only amendment to Noel Coward's lyric was the substitution of Penners for Elsie and the consequently necessary change of sex. Even Maureen was there in the original, so no poetry from me, really.

I think probably the latter. Myself, I would have kept my mouth shut* and basked in The Master's glory.

It was very sweet of Gareth to choose the lovely Coward poem. I'll never forget a wonderful performance of that in Edinburgh a couple of years ago by a boy with correctly floppy hair and appropriately louche style on the piano, so sweet.

And Mr P, I thought you looked extremely young and nimble with no evidence of the bad back you don't like to talk about.

Thanks for all the lovely comments about the food too. The chickens were in ecstasy over the gammon this morning and one of the game pies was frozen for Chris, so even though there was an awful lot nothing was really wasted, except a bit of lettuce, and who cares about that.

I've only got back to the computer after a very jolly weekend in Grantham, but I've been busting to join in the chorus of gratitude and praise. It was definitely the social event of the year, graced by the cream of (pp)UK society. Wit and wine flowed in abundance, and the game pie was a triumph (I'm so glad to learn that Chris will be able to have some when he eventually ventures back home).

And one of the delights is the fact that lovely Joce is no longer isolated. She now has a new Best Friend (my lovely sister-in-law) and the beginnings of a local Social Circle (all sorts of delights are being planned!). This morning we stood on said sister-in-law's terrace armed with binoculars and suspect that she and Joce face one another across the valley. This hypothesis will be tested by means of some sort of semaphore.

A Hundred Years Ago:

Hi, this is my first post here. We have recently bought a lovely Georgian cottage / hunting lodge / love nest in Lincolnshire, it's a nice mix of part fancy, part cottagey.

The cottage has reed ceilings throughout, most of which are fine. However the ceiling in the dining room is sagging badly and has been papered with woodchip!

The sagging is fine and arguably adds to the charm, but I am worried if we try to remove the woodchip it will bring the whole ceiling down. Which is maybe what we need to do.

Also, we would love to install ceiling roses and chandeliers in all rooms, but have been told that electrical wiring above a reed ceiling is a no no due to fire hazard. Can this be true?

Can it be true that that First Post was made only 20 months ago? And that the woodchip is STILL on the ceiling? and NO chandeliers? what the heck has she been doing all this time? :lol:

I wanted to carefully pick at the edge in the ceiling between two pieces of paper. I suspect that it would come off really easily in one small piece and then the rest will be stuck on fast.

I have found this forum and the lovely people on it to be rather a distraction! Then there's been all the background reading, Osbert Lancaster, and H B Cresswell, and E F Benson, and Sir Clough, and E Nesbit, without which no project like this should be undertaken! And finally the conclusion that important things should really be done by people who know what they're doing, not by me.

But you've all saved me hundred of pounds this weekend - Joss saying that I could just leave the dining room plaster and woodchip alone - Gareth saying that I don't need to have the breakfast room repointed and replastered, and for that I'm very grateful.
