Latest update from Middi's daughter this morning - I think it answer's your question Graham.


Just a quick update that you may want to tell your Period Property friends about.

1. I have created a private, closed facebook page with some of dad's friends and family. I spend roughly half hour - an hour each night texting, messages, facebooking and emailing various people to give them updates. Therefore, if anybody would like to be kept updated more regularly than the odd email, if they let me know their facebook name, I will search for them and invite them to be part of the group.

2. Dad is currently in Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford. He remains in the ICU at this point in time as the doctors want to complete a full and thorough assessment of him, in order to establish if Broomfield can meet his needs, or if he needs to be transferred. When we know a little more in terms of where he will be, I will let you know.

3. Technically dad remains in a coma. He can however open his eyes, move his eyebrows move his head side to side, and we know that he can hear us as when we call his name, he opens his eye's and we startle him. I am visiting him today armed with all of the lovely messages and emails I receiving from his friends to read out to him.

That last point reminds me of an incident when the husband of a friend was in the ICU in Norwich.
The staff were very gloomy about the possible outcome, and my friend was understandably very distressed. All he seemed able to do was shake his head from side to side.
Just out of interest, I asked him if he could move his toes - and he did. So I said that if we asked him a question and the answer was No, he should shake his head, and he should twitch his toes to signify a Yes.
It worked! So we dragged the staff over to his bed to witness him carrying on a sort of conversation, to prove that he wasn't in a vegetative state.
In the end he made a full recovery, and is still going strong.

I don't think that can be right Mr P, Italian men never come home early, they are too busy with other peoples wives. The only reason Middi is a perfect gentleman is that he has been around our civilising influence, unless of course you know different :shock:

Ooh good - any news which shows signs of improvement in Middi no matter how small, has got to be better than the alternative of no change. It may be a long road back, but the brain is an incredible organ - even in Italians! 8)

Life saving TOP TIP for all men.
If you go fishing ( or anywhere else in the wild) and decide you need to have a pee, please DON'T aim the wee helplessly through the undergrowth or an hedgerow.
You have no idea what is like to feel the wrath of an electrified animal security fence tracking back along the wee and attacks your willy. I guarantee you will learn swear words you didn't even know existed !!!. I do.

Hello 'Marm! How lovely to hear from you - it's been a while!

I received this news from Middi's daughter this morning:

Dad is fully awake and out of his coma. As far as we can tell he has full cognitive function, which is absolutely amazing. The only problem is his short term memory has gone. He is on the stroke ward now. He has lost all of his muscles, so he will have to undergo an intensive period of rehab. He can move his arms and legs, however between co-ordination and no muscle he can't to it very well. Yesterday he started to eat pureed food (which I'm sure he probably hates!), but its a fantastic sign that his body is starting to remember things like how to swallow. He is able to talk to us (although he can only whisper - his voice box doesn't seem to be working at the moment).

The good news is that now its about recovery and rehab - no longer about keeping him alive. I imagine he will be in hospital for many weeks / months, but we will be getting him home as soon as poss.

More than happy for you to post this to all his wonderful PPUK friends. Now that dad is awake, I would like to read him a set of new messages from his friends, so please feel free to send something over to me to read out.

This is just fabulous news. I have put an update in the other place.

I don't understand that point about short term memory though, the medics seem to have missed the fact that Middi is a man. I have been married to His Lordship for quite some time and memory seems to be extremely selective at the medium and long term level and almost non existent in the short term. Since most of my female friends have similar experiences I can only assume it is just a natural male condition and nothing to do with being poorly :wink:

I have a friend who suffered from a loss of short term memory. It is rather strange for him, as he remembers things through his long term memory. He can however function very well in all other aspects at work etc.

And I'd like to congratulate Milady on her perceptive diagnosis.
I find that when I just mention something, it seems to by-pass all the vital synapses. I find, however, that if I preface the remark with something like "Are you listening to me?" and if it's something really important, reinforce it with "What have I just said?" there's a fair chance that something will have sunk in.

But I'm sure that Middi's not like that.
