Tonight, OH and I were talking about this thread, Joce's dilemma , and my reference to memories of clear clean river water under Magdalen Bridge. We remember swimming in most parts of the River Cherwell during our childhood--- no ill effects --wonder if it would still be the same now.
I've got no real evidence to back it up, but it seems intuitively true, to me, that exposure to bugs and grime can't really be such a bad thing and must surely keep our immune systems up to scratch.
As for river water, FF junior is a keen kayaker and is in a river somewhere most weeks. His local spot is the National Whitewater Course in Nottingham, which is fed from the Trent and he has been paddling there for many years. When the Trent rises the whitewater course is closed to the public because of increased water pollution levels and 'Trent Belly' is a well known phrase amongst whitewater kayakers in the UK.
For certain reasons, FF junior can use the course when closed to the public yet he has never had any problems, unlike many less frequent users of the course and a friend who contracted a bout of Weil's disease. Coincidence? Perhaps, but it's one he shares with most of the others who regularly use the course, even when closed.
Perhaps someone could sell bottled Trent water as a health tonic?
The garden backs on to the trent, sometimes it is clear and you can see large barbell feeding, other times it is murky with all sorts of "nasties" in it! I have drunk a bit of it by accident and come to no harm!.
Oh, so it was you Joce  -- wonder how many times my Bro in law walked their retriever past you every morning. When we were at The Dragon School in the '50's, Port Meadow froze over and we all had fun skating there!
What a nice memory Joss! Port Meadow is so lovely in all its seasons.
And belated apologies to your brother-in-law; The Daily Mail called me a "petite iconoclast" but in truth I lived like a little wild-cat in those days. Wish I had a few more souvenirs; the outfits concocted of lace and feathers, the most 19th C version of sub fusc I could get, the Size 3 6-inch leopard mules Bob Carlos Clarke had made for me - all gone.
I will have to ask Bro in Law if he remembers seeing such a glam wild cat on Port Meadow--- !! That's what being up at Oxford was all about!
I recall a group of us doing the conga down the middle of The High Street, wearing no more than a gown and mortar board!!
