Blimey, I must be very thick skinned. I didn't even notice any unwelcomingness. I thought the OP got a very positive response from a broad range of opinions. If that was unwelcoming I must work in totally hostile environments I would have labelled it as engaged, passionate debate and to be encouraged. Vicky

I agree, I have been here about 3 years and lurked for a while before that, and compared to some of the virtual flaying that occurred then, this exchange was practically a group hug.

Just wanted to add, re the floor tiles, that if you do take them up to go the insulated floor route, then I suggest that you just put them in a pile in the garden for a while "while you decide what to do with them".
This is what I did with my laths, which I stripped out to get back to the timber frame in my house when I first bought it. Shamefacedly, six months later, I dragged them back in again, dried them out, and stuck them back on.
Sometimes your ideas change as you go on, and what you would have thrown out becomes precious. When I first bought the house I was thinking I would have all new joists and new stairs, throwing out the wonky ones that are there. Now I think I'd bite anyone who tried to take my wonky stairs away.
Clearly you're up against other pressures and it is hard when you want to get things sorted and get settled in, especially if you're doing it for a family member. It's all very well living in squalor for years while you make up my mind what to do, but another matter asking someone else to.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. Views differ, people have different opinions, and you don't have to take every piece of advice you're given!
