Full marks to you for not caving in to the insurance company's tactics

Penners - I'd love to claim it is some form of stoic resistance or inbred determination...however, the financial reality is that I cannot afford to do anything other than pursue this to it's conclusion. The wall must be rebuilt (it is listed), the insurers are refusing and the legal path is long, fraught and costly.

Perhaps if we had a PPUK whip round to raise the requisite £40k, I might agree to bring this thread to an end :wink:

For what it's worth...I don't see a problem re-building the wall without concrete foundations if you use large enough stones as a footing spread wide except for some settlement maybe, and I'd use an underlay like terram with a stone barrier to help protect the wall incase of future flooding

Insurance compainies will always wigle and squirm their way out of paying. Say (Write and email to the head of the head office it's a genuine claim you're going to court it's going on the local tv and national newspaper you're bloging this on twitter google and wordpress and you'll submit theses blogs to all the well known social media sites like digg propeller twitter Facebook delicous etc etc repeatedly.

Trust me they'll poop their pants if they know they are being dished.

It's a lot of hard work and unconventional but it will pay.

Also if you do this blog, get your friends to comment on your blog and give it the thumbs up (Like with Digg youu dig the story or you bury it if it's not good) the more diggs you get the better for you and eventually you will get to googles front page... (i.e. say someone searchs for insurance there is the likelyhood of your blog associated with the insuance company you're dealing with will come up first and second pages and they the company won't like that) It's Cheap and free coverage for your plight

John and I are still recovering from the daily nightmares (broken body found on Dartmoor... body fished out of Loch Lomond... body under juggernaut...). The lad himself, of course, knows that he's immortal.

And, since this thread is to do with the evil machinations of Big Business, here's a warning about Tr*v*l*dg* :
Just because you've paid in advance, don't imagine that you can just present yourself at Reception and expect to get a room - especially if you arrive late in the evening. They have a policy* of overbooking and shunting latecomers to another branch.
This happened to us on Monday: we'd booked a night in the Tr*v*l*dg* next to Euston station so that we'd be able to ambush the lad as he got of the sleeper from Inverness at about 7.45 on Tuesday morning. We ended up in the Farringdon branch, which meant getting up earlier and missing the breakfast we'd paid for.

*It's in the 'Terms and Conditions' that from now on I intend to read with great care from beginning to end, before I tick any of those compulsory boxes that say I've read and agreed to them.

I've just checked the Pr*m**r *nns website and their Terms and Conditions don't mention the overbooking business, but refer to 'your guaranteed room'.
But I still don't trust any of 'em.

They've done that to Jo twice, well tried twice on the second time she kicked up such a fuss, woman, own, late night, 30 miles to other lodge, cost of getting to work, oh dear, we appear to have this room free!!!!!!!!

We use them a fair bit - well one or two particular lodges on regular routes. If arriving late (which is often the case when we stop in Perth en route from Flintshire to Ullapool) we advise them at the time of booking. Never had a problem.

Mind you I'd never use one in the South-East again (although have used the Euston one - nice noise from the overground tubes next door) because the turnover is too high and as a result they are very very grotty IME.

In my experience of the Inverness sleeper, you could have had your breakfast at Farringdon, gone shopping in town and still been on time for the train to arrive...

Just had a 'phone call from him, and learned that he's got a hospital appointment to have his knees looked at. The good old NHS has really sprung into action - he'll only have to wait for two months before he's seen, by which time either the knees will have mended, or deteriorated beyond repair. In the meantime he's going to have to rely on the diagnostic skills of a physiotherapist.

I'm having the same trouble. I have to log-in manually every time I visit, even though my browser is set to accept cookies and I tick the "log me in every visit" box. Sometimes I have to re-log-in several times in one visit.

I've PM'd Simon about it.

Auto-login seems to be working on my PC. I'm using the Firefox browser - not sure if this is relevant.

Works fine here in FF too. Can't remember the last time I had to log on.

If you are having problems, it is probably worth trying deleting the cookies to do with PPUK so that they get reset. It might sort the problem.

Thanks MdB, I'll try that.

If it still doesn't work, then I think I might switch from Internet Explorer 8 to Firefox. I've heard so many good reports of FF, but it's just one of those things I "keep meaning to get around to".

Mind you, Moo is having the same trouble, and she uses a Mac, so presumably her browser is Safari. So maybe it's not an IE-specific thing.

We'll see...
