I've come back to join in the Happy Birthday wishes, even later than Biff - (I haven't really left the Forum, I've been reading it regularly but not saying anything). I've just got home late and read this thread, and as no-one has correctly corrected that Latin yet, I'm afraid it falls to me.
The accusative of Felix is of course Felicem, NOT the barbarism "Feliceum"! So, "Felicem Diem Natalem!" (that construction is known as the accusative of exclamation). Penner presumably declines like Magister, and "Penners" seems to be a plural form, so addressing him in the vocative plural, "Penners", would be "O Pennri". Except there's only one of him, so presumably the 'S' on the end of the name in English is really genitive, implying belonging TO the family etc. of Penner? However, this would still be "Pennri" in Latin, UNLESS of course we are saying "Happy Birthday TO Penners", in which case those earlier scholars who suggested the use of the dative were correct, but I would still argue that it should be Dative Singular, as I believe there is indeed only ONE TRUE Penners. Thus "Felicem Diem Natalem Pennro".

Surely in this use of would ( I presume that is what woud is supposed to be ) it is being used as the past tense of will thus implying our dear friend Penners is unable to applaud for a reason? I hate to be pedantic but what do you think? However I agree that Piper has excelled.

On reflection, a more elegant and idiomatic Latin style could be achieved by putting Penners into the genitive, and making the whole phrase an expression of more abstract delight at the happiness of Penners's birthday.

"O Felicem Diem Pennri Natalem!" I think that scans as a line of verse too. Hendecasyllables perhaps, as in Catullus?

(if others here can more usefully use their science degrees to discuss climate change, the least I can do is contribute something gained from MY university studies.)

Firstly, Graham - you're right. I wouldn't get it in three guesses; I'd get it in one. Does that still qualify for the round of drinks - and by "round" do you mean you're buying for everyone?
