It must feel good to finish something (will need to try that some time) especially in a project as extensive as yours. It looks much better in brick than dirty render. The bricks look like they survived well behind the render.

Just wanted to say that looks absolutely fab you must be so chuffed. I have all things crossed that you will now be water tight, much rain in Cornwall and I am happy to report we are all finally watertight here and it's the kind of relief hard to put into words so I'm hoping you'll be experiencing that too when it pours over this coming winter
and no more buckets!
We are down to the final furlongs just a little more lime washing and painting and then carpets can go down in the bedrooms ....been walking on dusty chipboard for the last 6 months!

Well done, that's a very tidy job, you have made great progress. I'm sure you will have a very comfortable home. The new windows and arches have taken away from the period charm for me, but it does look very smart.

Is dark uPVC the latest 'thing'? A neighbour has recently had all their wooden windows replaced with dark uPVC and it actually looks ok - certainly better than any of the glaring white stuff I've seen. The house is only about 20 years old though so perhaps it carries them off better.
Mmm, yes the windows detract from the period charm of the cottage for me I'm afraid, although I appreciate timber replacements can be prohibitively costly having paid £10k just for those on the lower two storeys of the front elevation (7 windows out of a total of 9 at the front) at our last house (worth it imho as they were the icing on the cake). I'm personally not a fan of that amount of exposed brick either unfortunately* - but then I don't have to live there :wink:

This will probably sound like I'm on the defensive - I'm not, just airing some thoughts really
Tis a tricky thing to renovate a house as you are all well aware :lol: It gets tricksier (in my head)when, after removing all the knackered bits, there isn't much of the original left
As it turned out, three ish walls, a couple of fireplaces and two beams. All barring one wall and one fireplace was beaten and scarred. The two beams are doing ok
So after uncovering various things and realising there is nothing to be done with them what do you do....no idea really. Push it all over and start again? We would be lying to say we didn't consider it after realising what the extent of the 'damage' was, and I think if it hadn't been underpinned it may have gone that way. Things would certainly have been quicker and easier :lol:
Obviously we didn't, but then the next quandary is tying together the new bit's and the old bits, try to be sympathetic and keep what periody bits are left :shock: Again, no real idea, but will take the two mentioned examples....and give you the fuzzy logic behind the choices
The soldier courses - the ones at the front had had it. We may have managed to keep one but the rest were chipped to bu'@@ery. They weren't rubbed brick arches, they were straight soldiers with the mortar painted red and the 'fancy' angled design painted on after. Replace them - Nope, running out of budget (and time with the builders), and they would have cost a few shekels. So we took them out and matched them to the soldiers at the rear which were made out of blues to give a nod to the dark bricks the original front wall is constructed from (although they don't always look dark in the photos)
And the black windows. They weren't influenced by the current trend, honest Guv. The shed has always had black windows and doors as far as we could tell so decide to keep the theme going all round.
Inevitably you will be able to see where the new bits and old bit's are but we've come to the conclusion that isn't a bad thing (at least in our/this case), it's just the continuing history of this house.

I think the plastic windows look a lot better than the ones they replaced. Someone else has the chance to do something different in 20 years if they want now the house has been saved.
All of my windows were white. The new one is black for the full mock tudor effect and I might carry on and paint some of the others.

I know how you feel. I am compromising more and more on my house, it is impossible to continue with period correct everything; it would kill whoever tried. Windows and their surrounds are a bit of an obsession of mine hence my comment which perhaps I should have kept to myself, considering the Herculean effort you have had to go to. The house looks great, and the brickwork incredible considering your starting point.
You guys shouldn't keep anything to yourselves, you're a talented and passionate bunch and that's something to be proud of! We have valued the help, comments and encouragement from the day we started

We compromised in the end at our last house. Having bought it with the intention to stay long term - I hesitate to say "forever" as we sold the forever house in 2007 - we sadly realised after throwing tens of thousands at extending as well as doing the necessary rewiring, new plumbing (who could live with a toilet cistern that was on a different floor to the facilities in question, lol ? :lol: ), bathrooms and kitchen (as there was no kitchen when we moved in), that we would never be truly happy there.
This meant that finishing off the project was an exercise in damage limitation, so bedroom floors were treated to several coats of paint rather than the expensive carpet I'd originally chosen and things such as cladding the butt-ugly 1980 annex extension had to fall by the wayside......
As long as you are happy Jackpoint, that's all that really matters!

Still wondering about networking cables but I'm starting to think it will all run off wifi so may not bother with these, and will probably put some speaker cables in place in the hope that I will be allowed some sort of home cinema system if we can afford it after all this is done :roll:
We also have a couple of million cubic metres of fluffy insulation in the roof space. Lovely stuff to fit. No room to get a roll up there so had to cut it into batts and push it up a lump at a time. I now know why people are building with warm roofs :lol: It does however mean that some of the upstairs has plasterboard and is therefore looking a bit more houselike which is cheering.
These are two different rooms, honest guv! The builders managed to save two of the original roof beams when they were putting the new roof on, so at least we have a tiny bit of the old structure on show. Amazing how a couple of beaten old bits of wood can make you smile though.
