Hallway decorating

2 sets of french doors--- 4 curtains. they are the ones I have here now and illustrated earlier.( Made in Kings Lynn).

I have found a brilliant curtain maker here who is going to make them properly fit our bay windows. I unpicked a goblet at each end of each curtain ( a crime I know) to make them fit the width. Sue is going to create 2 small goblets at each end of each curtain and shorten them to just on floor level for £25. She's a brilliant find. It was a treat to meet her and feel that she really understands window treatments.

We are still trying to match the other spotty / pintuck silk, no luck yet so we may have to use the Lucille and trim the edges in some silk to match the spots.

Our dining room curtains were priced as follows:

2 pairs of curtains with 2 widths in each curtain
Apx. 30m of fabric (patterned one I posted)
Apx. 7.5m of non silk fabric for leading edges
Stockton lining + interlining
2 x pelmet boards
6m of fabric for pelmets
4.4m of fringe/braid
5m of 'jewelled' edging
Curtain tracks
Fitting/hanging/dressing

£4463 in total

Seems horrendous, but there is a full breakdown to the quote and the making charge is £226 per window (which includes the curtains, pelmets, fringing etc.) which I have to say doesn't seem unreasonable.

:shock: to £4463. But not really surprised, it's the ingredients of curtains that are so expensive, and the more complex the worse it gets! It'll all be worth it though Pford, and curtains cut down on fuel bills too. 30 metres of cloth is a horrific amount, but that's what happens when you buy a big, beautiful house!

Joss- I'm sure the Lucille would be very nice- you know I'm a big fan:

(The cost of those, by the way - was around £350 with me making them, including the Jim Lawrence fixings- but a very simple design and reasonably priced fabric when it comes into Laura Ashley's sale - I wouldn't be content with something as simple in the hall)

As for spending squillions on curtains, if you've got it, spend it! You get what you pay for. I fully expect to have to sell the car to pay for the drawing room ones, 'specially as Nigel's got me thinking I need this:

You could just do a simple paint job on the drawing room:

John Fowler later redecorated this room and used a plain yellow silk for the curtains.

Gareth, you're so naughty, and too clever at picking out things I love- I have to have trompe l'oeil in the drawing room now! Which delightful property are the pictures from? Remember you sorted out my folly before, with the bones - a little like dear Emma's at Belvoir?

Nigel, I showed the curtain man who came this morning the Sezincote bay, he nearly fell off the sofa. He was already reeling at my proposition for that hallway (and by the way that price I mentioned has now doubled, what with me wanting a far bigger treatment than he'd imagined, with jabots between the swags, and tails reaching to 2/3 of the length, and dramatic puddles on the floor).

Wallpapering finished today as promised

Wasn't as problematic as I'd imagined. I had purchased some of GP & J Bakers own brand wallpaper paste (ready mixed) and it was a very different consistency to what I am used to. Much more 'gluey' and white rather than translucent....was good though.

I even calculated the number of rolls perfectly, so am feeling quite smug at the moment.

Mmm, I can't wait to see that, I'm going on Friday 26th March, if anyone cares to join.

I did think very long and hard about a Gothick Beacon Cottage, but there's really nothing Gothick in the architecture here, so I think the classical route's better - plus a good deal easier to achieve.

Clearing the room today in preparation for the floor to be done this week. Also have to turn over the veggie patches...so no interior progress for a few days. Will post some pics when the floor is done.

Just got to make a decision on lights (you can see the wall light cable in the photos). I also have 2 ceiling lights (currently just plain pendant fittings with lightbulbs). Had originally planned chandelier types (but can't find any wall lights I like to match). Also a feeling that perhaps chandeliers are a bit boring....any thoughts anyone on suitable ceiling/wall combos?
