If you're out this way then I can also recommend my local for a very hearty and delicious lunch. It's a pleasant mile and a half walk though you may have trouble climbing the tower if you go for 3 courses first!

Gorgeous, I want to go! I really, really want a holiday in Norfolk/ Suffolk cycling and staying in different beautiful places (I won't camp any more), but Chris says I spend too much on decorating to do it this year, so I'll reward my hard work with lots of day-trips I think. I would not go so far as to say Skinner's papers are dire, I just question whether they are as good or authentic as block printed papers and if the price is similar they may not be the best buy for the money.

Mr Skinner's "Malahide" sample arrived this morning and is the finest quality paper I've seen - which I'd expect at the prices he charges. It really does give a beautiful architectural effect, but unfortunately it's only really suitable for a room with a picture rail, and without a chair rail, as shown in the picture:

I've chopped it about, but as I feared you lose the proportions when you try to cram it in below a chair rail.

Thats a shame although a lot of times in my experience when you try to renegotiate somethings true size to make it fit elsewhere it always loses some of its appeal etc and never looks right even though you desperately want it to. It is a shame though because if it had looked great you could have lopped it in half and saved on the cost!

You could always enquire as to costing it to be made just for your hallway? though prepare to pass out and you never know you might be surprised.
I am sure you will source soemthing that is befitting of your space... patience my dear patience... and i hasten to add i am running out haha !

I am not surprised you have run out of patience with me; my own mother no longer listens to my plans - except, occasionally, to snort "ridiculous" "dark" or "OTT".

But we are currently exploring the yellows, and Malahide can't be chopped in half, as I attempted to explain a few pages ago.

i meant i am running out of patience full stop . my own house is doing my head in or should i say him indoors working from home is.. this house just aint big enough for the both of us to be working from home right now! haha.. !!

I do most humbly apologise for any insult to your generosity of spirit. And I know just how you feel about 'im indoors too!

Anyway, we finally decided to attempt to reproduce this:

The yellow will be FnB's Print Room Yellow, the wallpaper is similar yellow stripe also by FnB. The ceiling will be FnB's White Tie, the woodwork New White. The prints will be ripped out of antique books on architecture (sorry), one of which I just purchased at the delightful sum of £1.50 in my local antique shop. There'll be a yellow velvet chaise longue, and yellow silk curtains with swags and tails. White lilies, and a thick, golden rug, will complete.

I'm thrilled to have just found some new sections of moulding, which had previously been Polyfillered and papered over. They're nothing fancy, but form an all-important edging to each of the arches. I've hacked off the concealing Polyfiller, and built up the edges delicately with Penners' One-Fill.

Looks good to me Joce! Here are some examples from my portfolio. I just wish I could remember where I got the borders from, they were parchment repros and really good to cut and stick. The single screen is pictures of houses known to me, the Angels from wrapping paper and the Grecian figures were life size, achieved by a very complicated way of enlarging sections of the images to create a montage in the required dimensions, then cutting. Not very cost effective, but great fun!!

Gosh, Joss, it's always such a treat to see your work -stunning (as were the previous pics several pages back in this thread now) Those screens are great.

If it does occur to you how to create the borders, do let me know, as I'm racking my brains over this. This shop has all the right bits and pieces, but it works out fiendishly costly at about 6$ per 5cm. If I could find a way to do it more cost-effectively it would be brilliant.

Do you think the effect takes its impact from the fact it's a kind of trompe l'oeil - or do you think it would look just as effective to use real, properly framed prints, cleverly arranged and with the in-betweeny loops maybe stencilled on the walls?

:lol: I like your analogy, though think you're terribly hard on yourself Nigel! The hall, we're still on the hall. The loo pic was just to show how the print room looks with a few stripes chucked in.

Joss -thank you so much for that. I'm now getting to the point of organising the Print Room effect, and I've ordered two of those now, plus another - all very cheap second hand on Amazon.

A curtain company are coming to measure up for the hallway doors - I just don't have time to make every single pair. Plus they'll do a better job. They've suggested it will be around £250 (the space measures 2.40 by 1.50 metres) for the making up, excluding the fabric - what have other people paid to have curtains made up? That seems pretty reasonable to me, with swags and tails as well. I'm sure it'd take me a week, even with machine stitching everything.

Never done so, so couldn't say, but it I had to cost my labour it would be much more than this I'm sure.

That seems cheap. I think I have spent more than that just on materials. My curtains are about 110 inches tall by 120 inches wide before pleating (11 French pleats per curtain), interlined and lined and largely hand sewn, plus swags and tails, silk bullion fringe and taselled tie-backs, brass poles for the curtains, reeded solid oak poles for the swags and hand-turned oak finials.

Nigel - it does seem to be the case. I'm not in curtain making mood. I'm in a bonfire lighting, fill 5 wheelbarrows a day with garden waste, scrub out the chicken shed kind of mood. (maybe I just know I can't compete with you on the swags and tails front!)

Oh, Ok - thanks Joss. Do you mean 4 curtains? You paid around £650 per curtain? Or 4 windows - so then 8 curtains? :?
