Or if they're driving ask them to bring some large containers of their tap water with them.
The 5 year old shouldn't be too fragile and the 3 month old will only be drinking milk naturally prefiltered or boiled water mixed with formula from sterilised bottles.
Unless you want an excuse in which case just daub a rough cross on the door

Are you sure that this is a non-return valve problem? (I'm not sure where such a valve would be fitted anyway.)

It could be due to a couple of other things:

1. You may have a run of cold water pipe that sits right beside a hot water pipe. When the water in the cold pipe is stationary, it gets heated by the heat from the hot pipe. This is a very common problem.

2. Your cold pipe might run through an area that gets heated by the sun. Any pipe run behind glass is particularly vulnerable to this - it's the principle on which hot water solar panels work.

Neither of these situations would necessarily mean that your cold water was contaminated.

Hmm. Thank you for those ideas Mr P. Not sure it can be that, the problem has never happened until last night and happened as tanks were emptying ( we are now back to having a dry well and no rainwater either). The plumbing is too complicated, though, for me to be able to explain or understand it. All I know is that there are 2 tanks and two systems, rain and well, and there's a switch to press if one runs out. The taps and pipes are supposedly separate but blistering hot water out of the pure cold water tap isn't good and means it's come from the murky sludgy slimy hot water tank that has held untreated rainwater for thirty years.

The window cleaner has very kindly given me a bin full of water for the decorating I'm doing today.

I will have to daub the cross on the door if we don't get any rain by next week. :lol:

At the end of a journey in your car to your place of work, should you find that the ignition key has become mysteriously stuck and refuses to either part company with the car or to start it again, think carefully before you call out breakdown recovery to come out in their nice big inconspicuous truck with orange flashing lights all over it to help you.

Oh dear.
A classic case of needing a cup of tea, a Kit Kat and a ponder to work through the problem before hitting the panic button.

I would have probably kept that story quiet, although I imagine the driver of the recovery truck has already posted it all over the "Breakdowns R Us" forum. :lol:

Not a particularly pleasant job, though I suspect a great deal of satisfaction knowing that things are working properly. After digging and laying new groundwater drains here, I no longer fret about what might be happening to our house when it pours with rain.
