Right chaps, I've got nearly 40 pages in the catalogue so far and, despite your help FF with the header/footer, all my pages are coming up numbered No.1 not 2,4,4 etc.
I'm using Windows 7 which has icons on the top of the screen to click but I can't find anything about sequential numbering.

Whilst my IT skills were last put to professional use over 10 years ago (and my degree in Computer Science now over 35 years old!), I remember having the same problems when learning this particular element and so can relate to your problems. Regarding the numbering, it used to be the case that you set up only the first page and whatever you set up on that page carries forward (as long as you set the right parameter in that page). Any amendment to any following header/footer effectively resets the header/footer from that page onwards. If you have, for instance, copied the header/footer to subsequent pages then it won't work. It took me many, many documents to learn this simple rule.

Regarding the index, it used to be the case that you have to identify what is to appear in the index (or contents or appendices, etc) by labelling them as such (a long and painstaking exercise) and then getting the program to create the finished table in the place where you want it. Since I still use Word 2000, all I can tell you is that indexing appears in the "insert" menu under "Index and Tables".

I am a little confused however, since I had assumed that what you were creating was an index on your PC to the physical books. To find what you want on your PC, why not just open the file and "Search"?

Thanks for that Greg and Penners I'll give it a go for the page numbers.

I intend to print off the catalogue and I want an index probably at the front of the book(let) which i can sort into subjects such as Architecture,Gardening, Crafts and Plumbing etc....

If you can point me in the right direction please.
Oh, I never thought of the 'find' function. That works great.

Remembering that I am using old software (Office 2000) so the later versions may be a lot better in this area, I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news on this one, but Excel is just will not do what you want. It is essentially a maths tool and you want to work with words, so it falls short.

All is not lost though. If you select your entire worksheet and drop it into a Word Document ("Paste Cells" in my version), thus creating a single large table, you would then be able to use this word document as your list and not the Excel spreadsheet. The word document would have 1 big table that you could easily add rows to, just the same as with the Excel spreadsheet you created. You would then be able to create an index. The downside is that you would have to go through the document and select every occurence of what you wanted indexing and mark it up as such.

The word Document would be a lot easier to manage from the perspective of creating indexes (multiples thereof), Appendices, Tables of Contents, etc. but they do take a lot of work in marking up the entries and not a little bending of the mind to then format, place and build the various tables (for that is what they all are within the document).

I realise this may not be what you wanted to hear, but if you want your mind bending a bit, I am happy to go there with you, albeit on different software! I am away for the week from today, so bear with me if I go quiet for a few days.

If (like me) you're not familiar with Visual Basic code, read down the thread a bit and you'll find details of exactly how to enter it. However, I do recommend that you create a copy of your workbook to experiment on - just in case Mr Cock-Up pops in for a visit.
